Warhol Silkscreen Up For Auction

The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York recently announced that Warhol’s silkscreen of Marlon Brando will be up for auction as part of a series of sales to raise money to further support the visual arts, as well as various museums.

Executed on raw, unpainted linen, the material quality of this painting echoes the rough masculinity of the subject. Coming from the Collection of Donald L. Bryant, Jr., major art collector and generous patron to many American institutions, Marlon is silkscreened with such rare and pristine clarity that every aspect of Brando’s intensity and strength is conveyed. – Press Release, Christie’s

The silkscreen is a rendition of one of Brando’s publicity photos for the 1953 film The Wild One and is one of Warhol’s more famous Hollywood portraits. It is estimated to fetch a hefty £13 million sum (nearly $20 million) when it goes under auction at Christie’s New York in November.

Another Brando-inspired work of Warhol, Double Marlon from 1966, sold for $32.5 million in 2008.
