Meet the BIG LomoKino Rumble Finalist #7: maria_vlachou

We introduce you to maria_vlachou, who created a LomoKino movie using shadow animation! Read more about it under the cut!

Shadow Play by maria_vlachou

What inspired you to create this movie, Shadow Play?
I was inspired by the Greek crisis, the camera itself and mostly by the incredible talent of my better half, Vangelis. Let me elaborate a bit.

  • They say that Greece stands with one foot in the west and the other one in the east. The shadow theater character “Karagiozis” has his origins in the eastern tradition (China, Turkey). In each country he’s called and represents something different. For the Greeks he symbolizes the spirit of freedom and resistance against authority, he always represents the low social – lower classes. Karagiozis is poor, hungry, illiterate but cunning, smart, rebellious, reactive but proactive, visionary to whimsical, intelligent, persistent and optimistic. Sounds familiar?
  • The LomoKino. I thought of doing this project again in the past using my SLR, but just thinking the meters of the film and work that would be necessary made it impossible. Then the perfect camera for a stop motion movie came along (come on … 144 frames) and before I realized it, I was making plans, scenarios, storyboards e.t.c.
  • The most important “ingredient” which made everything even more analogue, is the talent of Vangelis. He created these amazing figures from scratch. It was a lot of work and many many hours of his little and precious free time (hey! I helped too, a little…) [you can see the creative process in this album: http://www.lomography.com/homes/maria_vlachou/albums/1814007-making-of-shadow-play ]

If you win the prize money, what would be the concept for your next LomoKino movie?
The plan from the beginning (rumble or not) was to film the full length of “Karagiozis and the Accursed Snake” play, in stop motion. All the characters, full story and of course using the right equipment (white sheet panel instead of a glass door, better circular lighting and the right films).

What do you like best about the LomoKino?
I’m not much into video, or should I say I wasn’t? Well this amazing camera changed my mind and since I love stop motion films, LomoKino became my best friend. I’ll say it again – 144 FRAMES, you guys!

Share some tips for new LomoKino users!
Well I’m not an expert in using the LomoKino outside the house where you can’t control the environment, so I will just say that if you want (I said IF) a “smooth” result, you should scan all your frames in the same size and if possible use a tripod in order to avoid shaking frames.

Enter a new analogue dimension with the LomoKino. Lomography’s own 35mm analogue movie camera allows you to capture action and immortalize your story on film! Shoot 144 frames on any 35mm film and create your own cinematic masterpieces. Want to watch your movie the old-school way? We also offer the LomoKino and LomoKinoscope package!
