On Holiday with the Spinner: Taking it Through the Airport

2012-08-30 9

On holiday and your bags are already packed? Take a few minutes to read through first on some tips for your spinner surviving airport security.

Holidays are always exciting times, whether it be a city break, a beach holiday, or an all out into the wild, cutting yourself off from society wilderness experiment. When i first got my Spinner 360°, i couldn’t wait to take it with me on holiday – being able to explore a brand new place with a completely new perspective. However, just getting it abroad was a forseeable problem.

Lets be honest here, the spinner looks…suspicious. With the ringpull and the perculiar shape, it does look slightly like a bomb. And airports have a slight aversion to bombs.
In my experience, security took a good while surveying my bag under x-ray, so in order to avoid yourself the hassle, and in order for you to keep your beloved 360 degree panoramic camera, Follow these steps.

1. Explain politely and patiently what the interesting object in your bag is
2. Pack your camera’s instruction manual, and show it if you are getting hassled. It will soon be clear that the device in your hands is used to create powerful images, not explosions.
3. Show your film stash, if you brought one. More evidence as to your innocence.
4. Don’t be tempted to open up the back or pull the cord. only do this with permission, and if the three other steps have failed.

On my trip to Greece it took steps 1 to 3 before their suspicion ceased. I thought at that point I may lose my beloved Spinner.

Lastly, try not to become too hassled and irritated. Airport security is only there to do the very important job of protecting you from the bad in the world. Be patient.

Now enjoy your holiday!

This is great. I would have never thought about the spinner being a problem at airport security unless I was there myself. Thanks for saving me some potential stress on a future trip.

I've had the same experience, the X-ray machines don't paint the spinner in an attractive light so airport security will dig it out of your bag to look at it. I would advise not to load the spinner incase they want to open it
