Where you can find life in the middle of the desert and the thirsty car finally breathes.
Solitaire is a small settlement in central Namibia near the Namib Naukkfluft National Park. It currently features the only gasoline station, post office, and the only general dealer between the dunes at Sossusvlei and the coast at Walvis Bay, as well as to the capital Windhoek. You are in the middle of nowhere and then, suddenly you see life and a petrol station. The car, that is almost running out of gas, breathes finally.
You stop here and you find that that place is not only a petrol station but a genuine place with old card buried on the dry ground, an strange general store with lots of cheap wonderful books and gadgets, an old but beautiful shop with all kinds of food and a bakery with awesome cakes.
It’s here were you might catch a glimpse of Big-Moose who bakes the “Moose Bread” and the renowned apple crunble that is only served without cream. Don’t ask for any, because you’ll get the stock answer that it’s their cow’s day of rest. Don’t expect any hyper-activity here, it’s not the place where you would want to allow your blood pressure to rise too… high. Just relax and wait your turn. These guys are so laid-back that it can become infectious, and it’s rumored that some of them never leave the shop, the café or the restaurant at the end of the C19
