There is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself. Who wouldn’t enjoy a nice cashmere sweater or a dining in the finest restaurant in the city. But let’s consider the concept of giving to others can make you feel good. Research says that charitable behavior might lead to benefits for the giver.
Harvard Business School faculty and graduate students published a study titled, “Feeling Good about Giving: The Benefits (and Costs) of Self-Interested Charitable Behavior". The study investigates and analyzes the ways in which charitable behavior can lead to benefits for the giver. Based on the study, there are plenty of reason for someone to donate to charity. You don’t have to be a billionaire to spare a couple of dollars. Giving to charity can also improve your well-being. If you know you sacrificed some of your lunch money in order to help others, wouldn’t you feel good about yourself?
For many years, Lomography has acknowledged this concept and has adopted a charity lifestyle ever since. Since 2006 Lomography has partnered with Light For The World to help the people of Kikuyu regain their vision. The project has already helped over 1,000 people. As Lomographers, we all know the importance of sight. How we perceive the world starts with what we see through the lens, the lens of our cameras and the lens of our eyes.
The project focuses on helping to educate future eye doctors so that they can use the knowledge and tools to help hundreds of more people. By providing fellowships for ophthalmologists in training as well as training programs for eye care professionals, Light for the World is working towards a brighter future for the people of Kenya. The program not only educates and trains professional eye doctors; it helps train teachers to spot early onset eye problems in children and adults.
