We want to improve the Magazine section and find out how Lomography can serve your needs the best. Please tell us what you would like see more of or don’t like to see at all!

Dear Reader,

Due to the fact that you’re reading this, you are very probably acquainted with our lomography.com magazine; you might come by every hour, on a daily basis or a few times a week; your favourite sections might be the camera & film reviews, LomoLocations, Tipsters, LomoAmigos, Competitions or the Events section; you might also be a very active contributor to our magazine or just an occasional reader. No matter what you are and what you do – we want your feedback!

We constantly try to improve the magazine and also think of adding new sections, new possibilities for your contributions and new structures to it. Ultimately we want to establish lomography.com as the base for everything related to analogue, creative and experimental photography – and therefore we want to know how we can serve your needs the best.

What do you like about the magazine and what don’t you like?
What is your favourite section, what was your favourite entry in the past month?
What inspired you and what would you like to see more here?
What other news sources/blogs do you read that relate to analogue photography?
What are your ideas for future development of the magazine?

Please post your feedback in the comments section below. We guarantee you that we are very curious about your thoughts and that your contribution will help to develop our magazine to become better and better! Thanks!

i think the magazine section is great with the exception of a few bugs here and there. i think my fav sections on the magazine have to be the tipsters and competitions. the tipsters are lifesavers and the competitions section is nothing but great photos and inspiration.

i think newer posts to the magazine section should be more visible. maybe a different font color. for example if there is a new competition that is starting or a new location or event, they should be highlighted for atleast 2 days just incase you cant access the site for a day and the next day you go on and you can see all the new items in the magazine section with out to much effort.

in the future i think it would be cool to have a forum on the site.

i think thats it for now, ill think some more and get back to you. but all in all the new site is great!

Hi, this is not so much about the magazine but the lomo site in general. Sorry - but i could not find a place where i could post my comments about the site.
    1) A nice feature in the old lomo site was that when you looked at a home or member, you can tell easily which location/country they are based. However, this is not the case for the current site. I looked around a bit but could not find the info about the lomographer. Showing where all the members are based was a nice thing that demonstrated the global reach and appeal of lomo. Hope LSI can think about bringing that back?

    Dear LSI,
I am completely addicted to lomography and your Magazine. I simply love it. My favourite sections are the Competitions, the Film and Camera reviews. There are only very few sites with such a wealth of nice, hands-on reviews and such fantastic competitions. My favourite review last month was "Konica C35: Choose Lomography" by mattcharnock.
But, I think the contributions might be published a bit slowly. Lomographers addicted as heavily as I am need a constant fresh stream of lomographic information to feed upon when the shutter is not clicking! However, the most problematic aspect about the Magazine is the lack of a clear overwiev of competitions. I would like a more transparent listing of ALL open to contribution competitions. For example it is very difficult to find that the "The LC-A 25th Anniversary Postcard Project" is still accepting submissions! Furthermore, it might be helpful to divide the place of appearance of open and closed competitions as well as the winner announcements. Maybe a separate list with closed competitions pending winner announcement should be implemented. For example, I was looking out for the "Guess the Film! Winner Announcement & New Challange" winner announcement for the piggies for the new challenge (Fuji Instax Mini !) and haven't yet found it :o
What inspires me is definitely the film and camera reviews and the competitions and the tipster. Great ideas on new films/cams and new experiments to try! :D So I'd like to see more of all of that, especially competitions with a long-enough deadline to shoot custom pics for them, as it can be time consuming to send some special films for outward development :D
I read a lot many other sources that relate to analog photography. There is a huge number of flickr group discussion with a great wealth on information that I access regularly, but also many permanent sites, among others:

    www.wip.gr/
    www.lightleaks.org/
    dianacamera.com/
    moominsean.blogspot.com/
    www.fourcornersdark.com/

For the future development of the Magazine, aside from the restructuring I already adressed, I would like to see more quality content being also published in print form. If a print mag is not possible, then maybe a .pdf version is doable. A better referencing way is necessary in any case, there are too many great reviews/tips that are being lost in the archives after some time as newer articles take their place.
I am confident that the Magazine can aspire to even more greatness, despite it already being t3h r0xX0rz :D I would love to assist in that, so feel free to add me if you need the manpower ;)

Oh, I forgot! Also a way to upload pics of the cameras we are reviewing would be great (or also even the films (package/roll)), even digital ones if need be! In any case much better than taking pictures of slightly different camera types from other sites ;D

    1) Being able to manually organize the order of your albums would be great. Mine somehow got out of order so my newest were placed far back in my albums where they don't belong.
    2) Some sort of message service where you can send people your email or address or a private message without it being posted for everyone to see.
    3) An ongoing competitions link with them ordered by how soon they end and a pending winner section could be cool.
    4) Having the ability to delete comments, at least ones you left, so when there are multiples or you want to edit it you can.
LSI, you have all been doing great and I know you are working on a ton of things at the moment so keep up the good work.

I really love the magazine section, mostly the lomolocations and the tipsters. I'd also like to see the events section slightly easier to understand. I'd like to get involved with more events but I get confused about when and where they're happening as sometimes it tells you about events happening in a month's time or those that have just ended. Maybe more of a calendar type page? Keep up the good work LSI.

    1. it would be nice to have a "favorite" button in magazine, photos, lomohomes, so next time i can look back to the post by not browsing pages by pages.
    2. Lomographer's city/country
    3. i would like to see more pixel, lo-fi, old-school...elements like the old.lomography.com i actually like the old.lomography.com very much, like the MGMT website also very nice. but now the new.lomography.com is less analogue feel, more like digital.

  12. d_i_hunter

On the whole, the new site is cool, but the one big worry I have is that magazine articles 'fall off' the first page too quickly. Interesting film, camera reviews etc get missed because a flood of new posts pushes them onto the second page.
The 'recent magazine entries' graphic dominates over the list further down, but I'm more inclined to click on one with a graphic. On my monitor it's quite a scroll to get to the list - I use an 800px deep screen.
Hmm... I haven't expressed myself very well, but basically what I'm saying is that articles need a bit more of a chance to be read.

I am also in agreement with:
gvelasco's no. 3. about putting one picture in several albums.
    and lomosexual_manboy's no 2. about a... well... a 'lomomail' I suppose you'd call it.

And... I don't know if it's just me but ampersands/speech marks etc don't appear properly.

    Bring back Oktokino!!!!

The pictures are always shown sequentially. How 'bout slider to scroll through the icons? How 'bout icons (or pages of icons)? Why each pic in a set is loaded synchronously (just when I press "next") and not on the background while I am browsing?

I'd still like to see a forum or message board section, like what dpreview.com has. When I was shooting digital, I loved the dpreview.com boards and got tons of questions answered, as well as answering people's questions when I could. The shoutbox is nice, but it's just not the same. I don't know if this would be a "magazine" section or a main site section or what, but I'd love to see a forum.

What do you like about the magazine and what don’t you like?
i like everything about the magazine. like everyone else, i don’t like the bugs which infests the site regularly.

What is your favourite section, what was your favourite entry in the past month?
the competitions, which gives you probable chances of getting piggies – and I bellieve that it should be upgraded to a minimum 10 piggies per rumble! (too much eh?)

What inspired you and what would you like to see more here?
i’d like to see more updates regularly. i can see that most of you guys (LSI) are off on weekends. hence, the site updates suddenly stops during that stretch. well, most of the lomographers, (I think) frequent the site during weekends, and seeing the same stuff for 3 days is not really welcoming.

What other news sources/blogs do you read that relate to analogue photography?
fourcornersdark, holgablog, lightleaks, toycameraplay, urbanoutfitters, moominsean, polapremiumusa, day19, photojojo, lomomanila, lomotionsg…

What are your ideas for future development of the magazine?
it would be good if a downloadable monthly MAGAZINE (pdfmag) could be introduced!

    Other suggestions?
    1) When somebody wins a rumble or a competition – can LSI leave some note or email to the winning person so that at least they would know they won. It’s quite sad when everybody else knows you’ve won something without you knowing it.
    2) Bring back the lomowall.
    3) A private lomo-email within lomography.com community (like flickr).
    4) The photo of the day to be changed DAILY.
    5) To update the old competition/rumble page saying that the COMPETITION HAS ALREADY ENDED, and providing a link to the winner(s).
    6) Easier UPLOAD and ALBUM ORGANIZATION feature in LOMOHOME.
    7) A random photo which RANDOMLY CHOOSES a GOOD PHOTO, not an archived photo from the old lomography.com site.
    8) A notification email that blogs, film reviews and other submissions has been received by LSI. It’s quite difficult to wait and assume that everything has been submitted properly. Maybe a general ACKNOWLEDGEMENT saying that the submission is still being processed or in review would be enough.
    9) Less bugs, faster site.

I would like to say that the FACEBOOK and TWITTER tabs deserve an applause.

Well, how about getting on board the XXI century and getting full feeds (ie. with the actual photos) for everything? Making us go to the site is simply not cool. It should only be a requirement (to go to the website) if we actually want to have some kind of interaction with it. Otherwise, we're usually just info "consumers" and that's the way it should be.

things I want are 1. budges for winning competitions and rumbles.
    2. wish we could delete comments.
    3. wish i could change my submissions to a competition in case I change my mind before the deadline.
    4. I really really wish I could choose which picture will come first (key image) in the gallery when submitting location and film review, camera review and such! .

    Ok, here we go...

I really like all sections of the magazine, but the locations and tipsters are especially great. I also love the reviews where I can get technichal information and invaluable user opinions on cameras and films. I love the fact that the site is ever growing with information, expanding rapidly. The competions are great as well, especially the 3rd party collaborations with exciting new themes and long duration.

It would be nice with more options on sorting and searching the magazine and homes to make it more accessable (old posts and galleries dwell in the shadow of the new ones as it is now). The tags are good, but sometimes its not enough.

For homes I'd like to be able to sort the publications list (by category, alphabetically, chronological, etc).

There used to be a list of most popular locations, films and cameras by a specific user in his/her home, I'd like to see that one again. Also a section of most popular photos (most commented and most rated) in each home.

I'd like to be able to control the content in my home with more detail, for instance the order my albums are shown and HTML support for main page.

The order photos are shown is different if you view them via album view or via all photos. It's cool that I can change the photo order in my albums, but when a user goes to all photos view, then the photos are shown in the order they were uploaded and you quickly get disoriented if the photos were rearranged in the album.

I miss Oktokino, OSCM, badges and camera experts.

Piggybank could be more specific with references to where the piggies come from. My piggies tend to get lost on their way to my home all the time, so it's really hard to keep track of the ones I got and the ones that are missing.

Also, 30 days expiration of piggies is a bit too short, especially since you have no control over when new articles are being published. 60 days would be much more fair.

Deletion of submission entries. If you upload the wrong image or misunderstood the rules, it would be sweet to be able to correct that mistake and it would make things a lot easier for both the staff and the users.

It would be nice with a personalized page where I could see a list of all competitions that I submitted shots to and a list of pending publications where I can see the ones that are yet to be published. I think it would ease a lot of user's minds if they could see that their review, location or blog post was recieved and is being processed.

The lab is still dodgy, I usually get errors half-way through when uploading and sometimes it doesn't work at all. I'm tired of getting the ''server response'' error or the ''invalid file format'' error all the time...

Finally, the loading speed of the site. When we were in beta mode in the beginning it was super fast for both uploading and viewing, but with the increasing number of users the site has gone from Formula-1 to Tractor speed... Browsing through albums can be a painful task today, not always, but most of the time the images load really slow.

Thanks for listening and I hope you find my comments useful...

TIPSTER! I think this is great not only for beginners, but people who are looking for new and creative ideas to spice up their photography. The competitions are also fun ways to get people thinking about new photo assignments.

There are a few bugs and links that don't lead to anywhere, which is frustrating from time to time. I think the new posts should be highlighted in a more clear fashion. The top 3 articles on the magazine homepage is always things that have already been linked to in the newsletter. I think the newest posts should be put on the top and maybe dedicate a sidebar to the ones highlighted in the newsletter. I would love to also see a calendar format for the events in addition to the list. As far as competitions go, I think it'd be good to create a separate section in the competitions category for announcing the winners. I think it'd also be good if you emailed winners to let them know that they won, so they can see which photos they posted that won. Sometimes it's easy to forget that you entered a particular competition!

There seems to be a bug uploading pics for the reviews, the uploading process seems to stop in the middle... Why can't we use already uploaded pics from out albums to submit to reviews (in my case it means uploading twice)? ;)
It would also be great if there were a reply function for the comments, so that the original poster is notified of the reply :D
Lomomessaging would also be awesome, imagine how many more doubles etc. would be facilitated if everything wasn't always immediately public and posts disappeared in the flood of messages (for example when you upload 20 albums at once) :)

I love the mixture of articles in the magazine and my favorite sections are the comps and the camera reviews. The reviews are just eye opening when you get to be introduced to something new but oldschool :) One of my favorite camera reviews is the one my mephisto19 of the Holga WPC, and it's those kind of articles that inspire my creativity.

I don't really use the Photos section too much, I feel overwhelmed when I'm trying to browse and then when the images take forever to load, on days, I just lose patience and don't use it.
My fav entry from last month is the series dealing with the LCA Race, since I'm a member of one of the teams, I'm just addicted to when you post anything about the race.
Every once and while I'm on JPG but I'm addicted to Lomo so no one else really compares :D
And I totally agree with anarchy! I would love to see sorting and searching for the homes to make it more accessible. To be able to sort the publications list (by category, alphabetically, chronological, etc) is a great idea because sometimes I can't tell what are the most recent articles for someone's home, or I'm looking for a specific one but I can't find it because they have so many attached to their home.

Also a most popular photos (most commented and most rated) section in each home would be really cool!

Finally, I would like to see an IM type system that pops up to chat with those that are your friends or just others that are online at the same time. I'll definitely still use the comments on the pictures and on the homes, it's just a hassle when you have to go back and forth between your page and their page to see if they respond, when they respond, etc. I think it would be neat to know if they're online to chat or if not, then I could just leave them a message on their home.

-something i liked on the old site was when you entered a mission, you could look at all the submissions as a list, and organize that list by username, date entered, number of views, number of comments, and so on. i liked that a lot and im sad to see it go. the missions seemed like a much bigger deal before, it sort of feels different now.
-i also like the 'expert in' on our homes, it was fun. and i liked seeing what awards people have won on their homes, like hotd, missions winner, review of the week, location of the week, rumble winner, photo pf the week, etc.
-it would be lovely to be able to use a photo we already have in an album as our avatar also.
-the ability to organize albums would be nice, almost like an album wall. we all have our all time favorites i guess :o)
-oooh and one that i would love is a list of tags we have used in our pictures. i dont care where its put, but i think it would really describe us as individual lomographers and she our different lomo personalities!
-photo of the day everyday would be nice, i didnt realize it was still on-going! i thought it was lost and forgotten til just recently.
-being able to delete comments would be soooooooooo great. good for when you write fart instead of dart. or duck instead of.........tuck...
-where we are from on our home.

I sent you guys an e-mail about this awhile ago but never got a response:

    I collect vintage film cameras.
(and I'm sure I'm not the only one on here who does)
I want to post a review about some of my cameras...but they aren't on your list.
There has to be a way to add them to the list.
Otherwise you guys will keep getting reviews about the same cameras over and over.

Also the system in which we organize and tag photos takes forever!
The interface is really boggy and glitches all the time. Sometimes it won't let me upload images even if they are the right pixel dimensions, size, and in jpg format. It's weird, I have a few photographs that this website refuses to recognize as a jpg....but it IS a jpg. Doesn't make any sense.

Making tagging easier would be better.
Also I noticed your tags are case sensative. That doesn't make sense.
It should matter if I say Holga or holga. but your website recognizes those as two completely different tags. Also some items say they are available in your shop but some say they aren't..(even though they are) but it doesn't recognize this because of the case sensitive tagging.

    - you said that there is a buttom "follow" under the avatar of users, but it's not!
    - where is the lomowalls??
    - how can I get the info about competitions? Or there are no more competitions?..
Hug me to feel better with all your changes :-)
