That’s right, Birmingham has more mileage of canals than Venice!!
I spent a beautiful sunny day out with my wonderful La Sardina, twin reflex and old college film camera on the canals of Birmingham; under railway tunnels, sunning myself along quiet stretches of canal and grabbing a bite in the hustle and bustle of central Birmingham.
Brindley Place is one of my favourite places in Birmingham. It’s a second’s walk from the brand spanking new Birmingham Library, all pretty and swirly, and the amazing Symphony Hall, where I spent many a Friday evening listening to ‘rush hour jazz’ and not forgetting all the hours I spent in the Ikon Gallery… There is just so much to do in this part of Birmingham. Food, music, culture, fun times!
In the opposite direction you have the awesome SeaLife Centre and National Indoor Arena; I spent so much of my teenage years there – Prodigy, Lionel Ritchie, Incubus, Backstreet Boys (please don’t judge me)…
It’s also the place to go to wind down. Miles and miles (35 to be exact) of canals gives you plenty of opportunity to chill out, either on your own canal boat (you can hire one if you don’t have one) or in one of the many pubs along the way; perfect for a nice sunday of sun soaking. You can have the hustle of the city and relaxing down time just minutes away.
So next time you’re in Birmingham, as well as visiting the Lomography store in the Bullring (just a 15 minute walk away), go down to and eat, drink, chill and be merry at, what I think is, the best place in Birmingham… who needs Venice!
