An Analogue Journalist at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona

2012-07-25 3

The manipulation of the celluloid’s sensitive emulsion coloured the viewers, the musicians, and the atmosphere of the festival.

Venusplutón!, a webpage that, among other things, chooses the best indie national music videos, asked me to make a photographic documentary of the Primavera Sound festival.

The order was clear and direct. They told me something like ‘take as many pictures as you want to, and take them your way, so they represent the essence of the festival’. They already knew how I photographed concerts thanks to the webpage Analogue concerts.

So with all this freedom, the only thing I had to do was relax and have a great time!

If there’s anything that catches my eye – and a festival is the perfect place for it – is to take pictures of people, their emotions and their movements. So I divided my work into two parts, one about people and the atmosphere, and another one focused on musicians.

The thing about taking pictures of musicians is having to deal with super professional photographers. I did what I could, and I was a bit impressed with all these big digital cameras and huge lenses.

Finally, the photographs pictured a mixture of a cheerful atmosphere and alternative as well as indie music.

The Beauty of Black and White

A popular quote by photojournalist Ted Grant goes, "When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in black and white, you photograph their souls!" Indeed, the lack of vibrant color forces the viewer to see beyond what is on plain view and recognize the atmosphere surrounding a photograph. In this post, we've handpicked black and white shots taken in various situations and exhibit different moods.

Would you rather lose your vision or your hearing? As photographers, we might choose the latter without a second thought, especially while viewing the festival photos that photographer Mart Vares captured with the New Petzval 85 Lens. Still, who doesn’t love the pleasant mechanical shutter sound of an old SLR that makes us commit to analog photography? While following the Nordic delegation at this years Waves Central Europe, we caught up with the Estonian band, Würffel, whose songs leave us feeling equally delighted.

How to Develop Photos on Stone in a Darkroom

I have always loved the idea of seeing my photos on stone and other natural materials. So, a few months ago, I began googling how it could be done. This is how I discovered (and fell in love with) liquid emulsion. Liquid emulsion is photographic emulsion which you can melt down and paint on any surface. You can then expose an image and develop it using traditional darkroom chemicals. In this article, I would like to explain the process a little, so that if you are also interested in giving this fun process a go, you can!
