Everyday is a Lomo LC-A+ Russia Day!

1

The LC-A+ Russia Day is a special edition celebrating the origins of the famous LC-A. I’ve had mine for about a month and it has been with me every single day! Read on for my impressions so far and results of first two rolls!

I was expecting the camera to arrive on a Friday, looking forward to an entire weekend trying it out. You can imagine my frustration when I missed the delivery! That weekend felt very incomplete…I took no chances on the following Monday and stayed at home waiting for the package.

Now, one of the special characteristics of this edition is that the camera and extras come inside a beautiful red rectangular box, which makes the moments from unpacking to first holding your camera even more exciting! It was in such a state of excitement that I took a quick glance at the instructions and fed my dear camera a roll of film. Surely it felt hungry after so much travelling!

Accepting the hard fact that it was past time I went to work, I pointed the camera at a corner of my room to test the shutter, and left taking the camera with me.

The very first shot

Eager to start shooting, I did not have a very productive day. Instead, I took some shots of the most colourful thing in my office when I found myself alone.

From that day I’ve taken the camera with me everywhere I go. You see, it is another great thing of this camera, how easy it is to carry: perfect format, not too heavy (but heavy enough to give you some stability when holding it and not shake), and with no buttons standing out which can be easily broken. So I kept taking photos the following days of life around me.

What’s also special about the LC-A+ Russia Day is the red leather cover. It is gorgeous and feels so smooth under your fingers! However, I was a little bit worried about it when I ordered the camera. I think one of the great things about LC-A is how discrete it looks, not attracting too much attention or scaring your human subjects. But fear not! When you hold the camera your hands you can cover most of it so it is like holding a photo-making secret.

I was dying to see my first photos so I have to admit that after the “Take your camera everywhere you go” the rule I followed the most was “Don’t think, just shoot” and still I’m quite happy with the results. I understand now why it is such a loved camera among lomographers! Obviously you need to cooperate by setting the distance and ISO correctly, compensating the viewfinder, and holding the camera steady, which I sometimes failed at.

So I can’t wait until practice and time turn me and my Lomo Kompakt – Automat into a me-and-my-Lomo Kompakt – Automat!

    Photographic Pairs

When a photographer encounters a pair, an instinct rushes in, "Is this a special, intimate moment I just stumbled on?" Or else, those accidents of two objects, two birds, two swaying plants camping together especially for your photo. This might not be the case, but it's still a pleasant thing for patterns and quirks to find their way into an everyday shot.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.

Lomography traces the role of women in photography with a special, comprehensive summary for International Women's Day.
