The Greenbelt in Austin, Texas

Locals love The Austin Greenbelt! It is filled with rock formations that produce water falls, cool watering holes, and fantastic hiking paths. South of downtown Austin, you can escape the urban sprawl and venture into a lush terrain of greenery. You’ll never guess that you’re just so close to the city!

When temperatures reach over 100 degrees in Texas, it’s a fact that many of us will retreat to shady trails that lead to cool creeks! The natural swimming holes are filled with locals just trying to beat the heat. On the trails along The Greenbelt, expect to find hikers, bikers, and runners, which in my experience have been very courteous to sharing the pathway.

When I reach a shady spot to settle in, I immediately head right for the water. The creek water flows at a fast pace but the shallow rock formations allow you to stay put in one spot without getting carried away. Pack a picnic, grab a friend, and bring a camera. An entire day can easily be spent here, soaking up the summer sun. Specific spots that I would recommend are Sculpture Falls and Twin Falls.

There are several entrances to access The Greenbelt:

- Zilker Park: The entrance is close to Barton Springs Pool. They share the same parking lot.
- Spyglass Access: exit Mopac on Barton Skyway going east. Drive to the end of the road, park, and begin the trail.
- Mopac South Access: Heading South on Mopac, take exit TX/360 merge onto the Frontage Rd. and head straight, you will pass over loop 360. Stay straight and right ahead (1/2 mile) will be parking for the trail entrance. You can’t miss it!

- no glass
- doggies must be leashed
- bring water and sunscreen

For anyone who has yet to visit The Greenbelt, you will feel like you’ve found a hidden treasure! It truly is an amazing place for Austin. Remember, don’t litter! Keep this place awesome!
