Festivals in Film: European Northern Soul Weekender

2012-07-09

My mate Gary asked me to cover his event, the European Northern Soul Weekender. As a daughter of a Northern Soul DJ, I will always jump at any opportunity to throw some talc on the floor and get on down with my soulful self!

This was the second European Northern Soul Weekender in conjunction with Eurocultured festival. The first event was 3 years ago which saw Gary Bratchford organising a Manchester soul vs Belgium Popcorn event, a small all day affair where Gary was to meet his future promotional partner Liam Quinn.

Liam has been a Rough Trade Tour DJ, runs the Beat Boutique, has DJ’d at soul events in Switzerland, Sweden, Ireland and the 100 club in London.

Gary runs a quarterly Manchester City Centre Allnighter at the Attic. Recently he’s been DJ’ing at the Gonzo Club in Zurich and The Kendal Calling Festival.

This year’s event on a larger scale was set over 3 days and 4 venues including NOHO, Attic, Jabez Clegg and the Blackdog Ball room. I always like a night at Jabez Clegg and Mancunian soul stunner Leona Murphy (now located in London) did a great set and certainly looked the part.

Not happy with just being probably the coolest looking female soul DJ on the circuit Leona is also a fashion designer and collects quality soul vinyl.

The Monday had a great vibe, lots of break dancers came along and the relaxed atmosphere made for a good party.

One thing I love about taking pictures of people at Soul dos is they never fail in the style department. As expected there were some very stylish ladies and gents at this affair.

DJ’s from all over Europe take part in the event and artists included the likes of Marc Forrest – Hip City Berlin, Ralf Melhart – Hamburg Soul Weekender, Paul Grant – Sleepless Nights – Dublin, Malayka – Bamburg Soul Weekender, Yann Vastie – Va Va Voom – France and Henning Boogaloo – Not too Young Soul Weekender – Switzerland.

If you are into your Northern Soul this weekend is a must. So tell me have you been to any club nights with a difference recently? Are you a master of the talc and sprung floor combo? Tell me your Soulful tales.

Love and light Jx
