Analogue for a Day: A Tourist in My Own Hometown!

2012-06-29

My favourite thing about taking a break from my busy, busy life is going out and about with my film cameras, and feeling immersed in my own culture. So I became a tourist in my city for a day!

A few days ago, the weather was warm and sunny, perfect for a big walk, and my friends and I were all in the mood for some fun. We ended up discussing places to go to, and there was one place none of us had ever been to: St. George's Castle in Lisbon, an old Moorish Castle placed on top of one of the Seven Hills, Lisbon is known for. And just like that, the decision was made, and we got going.

You can see the whole city from the castle. :)

Walking up, up, up the steepest hill in Lisbon, in between small decorated streets, we passed some beautiful places and I started shooting right away. I used both my Diana Mini and my Lomography Fisheye 2, with Lomography 800 ISO film. We got to know a part of the town we weren’t used to and had wonderful conversations with a really nice English man named Dudley who we met on our way, which combined with being able to document my “mini-tour” around Lisbon on film, and the feeling of belonging to such a beautiful culture, made up for a really interesting and unforgettable afternoon!

Some photos, including one of Dudley at the end!

Still into the spirit of Lisbon, we decided we would also attend this big local party at night: The Eve of Saint Anthony, part of the Popular Saints Festivities, also commonly referred to as Lisbon Celebrations. Here I found a wonderful description of it, so I thought I’d share:

“Lisbon puts on a festal air throughout the month of June, welcoming visitors with a plethora of unmatched entertainment opportunities locals have been enjoying for decades. Attending Festas de Lisboa is a great occasion to get to feel the throbbing pulse of the local life, when Lisboners know no other pastime but to eat, drink, dance and party on the streets.”

Then, at night, a few more shots were made on expired Kodak T400CN film.

When I finally arrived home I was exhausted but happy. I felt that I had taken a plane and traveled to a different country. It was reinvigorating to experience this city in the way we did. A day truly well spent! Which made me fall in love with my dear Lisbon a little more.

Sometimes we don’t appreciate what we have, but I bet your hometown has its own beauty, too. So I hope this inspires you to to go find it and register it on film, wherever you live!

The Diana Mini is the ultra-compact, petite version of the Diana F+. This camera takes soft-focused, lo-fi images in 35mm and allows you to change between half-format and square shots with a flick of a switch. Get your own Diana Mini now!

At first, Skyler only visited the Lomography website to take a look at sample photographs taken with different point-and-shoot cameras. Seeing the immense focus given by the community to film photography and experimentation, two things she absolutely loves, she immediately signed up and started her own LomoHome. In this interview, she talks about her go-to camera, the difference between digital and film photography and more.

The World According to Herr Willie: The Spirit of Jogja

It is the marvel of Java, the cultural center of Indonesia: Yogyakarta, or, as we assimilated locals call it, Jogja! Jogja is full of historic sites and exudes a very adventurous yet welcoming spirit. It is a true multireligious melting pot that has seen kings and sultans come and go, and religions introduced and either went or stayed. Time has been gentle on Jogja. It's one of my most favorite cities in Asia.
