UK Cityslicker Mikey: The Longest Running Skate Shop in the UK!

Go Skateboarding Day is coming up on June 21st and I went to go and visit the UK’s longest running skateboard shop here in my hometown of Poole to celebrate!

In 1976 a small hardware store here in Poole started to sell Roller Skates and Skateboards in its shop, In the mid 90’s this changed and became the store it is today. The Skate Shop. Boasting one of the largest skateboard collections from the 70’s and 80’s, The Skate Shop owns an impressive history inside the small boutique store, as well as it being the longest running retailer of skateboards in the UK.

The Shop is situated on a small parade in Lower Parkstone and is ideal, as it is only a little over a mile away from Baiter Skatepark. Poole’s local Skatepark, Which is only a quick skate through Poole Park!
The Shop inside has hundreds of Skateboards everywhere you look. Both walls are covered in decks ready to buy and also features some of the more retro skateboards which are hanging from the ceiling. It also features a Shoe wall and various clothing racks in the centre of the store.

The reason why I chose to write about The Skate Shop rather than the other few Skateboard shops in my area is because back in the days of when it was a hardware store called Macintosh and Mizen, my Uncles, who are now in their mid thirties, bought their first skateboards from there when my Grandad went to buy carpet cleaner. Imagine that, going to buy carpet cleaner and coming out with two skateboards as well! It was my uncles who then took me there when I was 8 years old and bought me my first skateboard. I have been back here ever since, buying new decks and other skateboarding paraphernalia and it would feel wrong to go anywhere else!

So next time you are in Poole, go chat to Steve at the Skate Shop, buy a Skateboard, and keep Independent skate shops alive!
