LomoGuru of the Week: Suizidekid

If there comes a time when film isn’t that easy to find anymore, that’s probably his cue to finally consume some of the film rolls that he has stocked! But, he thinks that there’s no point on being delusional, rather, now is the time to shoot more on film! He’s Suizidekid, our LomoGuru of the week!

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

First when I was new in the Community, I wanted to be LomoHome of the Day and I prepared with my brother a lightpainting album. But I got LHOTD before I even had a chance to post it.

At the end of last year after some doubles with grazie, we both got so popular. It was and still is a great feeling, that I can reach so many people from all over the world with my photos.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends? If yes, name at least one of them.

Yes. I once saw a girl with a Diana Mini at the Stephansplatz here in Vienna and then a month later I saw some photos on the Lomo site and I was sure that it was her. So I found out that she is doing an internship at Lomography and is from Bulgaria. We talked a bit, and have met up with her each week since then. Grazie and Poepel told me they will come to Vienna too, o let’s see what happens … And there are a lot of people who I wrote to a lot and who are really inspiring….but I won’t say names, I think they know it anyway.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next 5 years? Why?

I hope so, if there are any slide films left…. I shoot digital too, and I work as a photo editor in a photo agency
but shooting analogue is relaxing and keeps my mind free. I also get easily addicted to collecting things and now I have almost 100 rolls at home. That means I will need some time to shoot all my rolls and this could last some years.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

Definitely the LC-A+. It is the most all-round Lomo camera. With the light meter you can shoot carelessly and with the ISO setting you can play a lot on crossed processed films. But I love the Sprocket Rocket too. I got it from my uncle for my birthday 4 months ago, and since then I got so many good rolls with it. I love dramatic atmosphere and it is the best camera for it whether if it’s black and white, redscale or crossed processed slide.

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Just try it. I get so many questions about camera settings and stuff like that. Be brave and try it. Often there are great results on accidents and you will learn a lot about films and cameras (but you can still ask me questions!) :)

They are the ones whose passion transcends not only by what they do and say, but also with what they see and capture with their film cameras. And with such attributes aforementioned, they are what we call LomoGurus! Every week, we get to ask questions and reveal some insights with the most talented and productive of all Lomographers from the Community!

    Trusty Bags for Trusty Cameras

We spend copious amounts of time stalking camera forums and researching specifications that "hunter" seems a more fitting term than "collector." And yet, when the time comes to pack all this game—the new or thrillingly ancient cameras—we DIY padding on the spot. (Guilty of trying to avoid the unappealing gear bag from the department store.) Last year though we stocked up on camera bags that are as cool as they are protective. Here are some of them.

Self to the World: The Photography of Leanne Surfleet

A self-portrait may take root in confidence, extreme shyness or alternate bouts of each. Leanne Surfleet goes through this kind of fluctuation when the camera is all eyes. The attraction—as far as we’re concerned—is the mix of uncertainty and a kind of quiet poise. And here and there, a flash of skin that is more a mystery than full-on revelation. Even Surfleet’s portraits of other people have the same hushed invite, as if to say questions are encouraged. There we took our cue.

Camera Collections: theonlydrp's Vintage and Handmade Gear

Some lomographers prefer to hoard as many analog cameras their shelves and budgets can support. Some would rather keep a manageable number that they can regularly shoot with. Community member Joshua Kennedy belongs to the latter group. From 40 cameras, he downsized his collection to 13, as he puts it, "really good ones" that suit his shooting habits and style. In this interview, he breaks down his small yet dependable arsenal of vintage and handmade cameras and how an organized schedule allows him to shoot with each one on a regular basis.
