Summer Festivals in Film: Ontario's Ribfest

Every summer since 1985, Victoria Park in London, Ontario has been packed with rib-loving individuals keen to get their hands dirty on the best of the best meat in North America. Last year, my saucy hands somehow managed to hold a Colorsplash camera packed with redscale film and this is how the day turned out!

On a hot summer’s day in August, Victoria Park—the main outdoor space in downtown London, Ontario—is transformed from a green squirrel wonderland to a smoke-filled barbecue pit. Rib-cooking vendors from all around North America battle to win trophies topped with gold piggies for categories like ‘Best Sauce’ or ‘Peoples Choice.’

Walking along ‘Ribber Row’ you get to see the shop fronts displaying how many awards they have won, and get to see the chefs slathering sauce everywhere. Eventually we decided on two stalls which had big line ups so we thought they were busy because they were the best, the tables of trophies out the front also were a big draw.

Sitting in the shade of a tree we sat and ate our ribs, and to be honest we expected a little more than what we got. When you take into consideration how many racks they would have to be cooking over this one weekend to feed the approx 200,000 people who go each year, you can completely understand a not absolutely perfect plate!

My favourite thing at any festival though is people watching and the people and the bands at this festival definitely were fun to watch!

This year’s Ribfest will be on August 2-6. Visit Canada's Biggest Party for more info.
