Film and Fashion Match in The Little Slide Dress

Could this be the next DIY project for lomographic ladies? Artist Emily Steel has found a way to combine style and snapshots by fashioning a little black dress made out of slide film negatives and LED lights! See the glowing garment and find out how Steel created it here.

For the Wearable Technology program at the Victoria University of Wellington’s School of Design, photographer Emily Steel designed “The Little Slide Dress.” What looks like a glossy LBD actually reveals rolls upon rolls of developed slide negatives when illuminated by LED lights which glows according to ambient brightness.

The inspiration for the dress is classic movies (Cannes, anyone?) and the ‘magic of film.’ Steel adds, “[It’s] a modern take on the classic Little Black Dress. It uses modern technology and blends it with a 100-year-old medium, film. With film we only see what really is going on once the lights go out. For this to work there needs to be a balance of projected and ambient light, something the Little Slide Dress tries to emulate.”

The artist, who also shared a series entitled “Lomographic Remediation” on her blog, outlines the process for the project.

“The dress is constructed out of individual slide film images that are backed with LED’s. An Arduino Lilypad connected to a light sensor controls the brightness of the LED’s. The sensor reads the how much ambient light there is and uses this value to determine if the LED’s will be off or on. When there is lots of light the LED’s are off and it looks like a shiny black dress with small hints that something else is going on. Once the sensor determines there is the right amount of light for LED’s to be seen in their full brightness it turns them on. When the dress is on the lights slowly pulse and the images on the dress come alive.”

While it might be a little too ambitious for a home DIY project, we can already see lomographers thinking of ways to reuse and recycle negatives for wearable art. If you’ve tried to make emulsion apparel, tell us how it went! Write a Tipster about it and earn piggy points! :-)
