Michael Haneke wins the Golden Palm in Cannes

Yeah! On sunday Austrian director Michael Haneke won his second Golden Palm at the 65 Filmfestival in Cannes for his new film Amour.

Michael Haneke’s new movie Amour (Love) was labeled as a favorite right from the beginning of this year’s Filmfestival in Cannes. But because in the last years of the festival the jury often came up with a surprising winner, there was some doubt if Haneke would actually receive the Golden Palm in the end.

In Amour the Austrian director – born in 1942 – tells a very personal story. He includes not only his experience of a lifelong marriage but also his big love of classical music. A couple – both over 80, former music teachers and married for decades is fighting new challenges that getting older and death bring into their relationship.

After Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) has a stroke, Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) takes care for her, accompanies her on her way to death and manages to not lose faith. At the same time he also tries hard to protect their daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) by not confronting her with the collapse of the mother.

Haneke tells a very sensitive story with high class actors that shows a subject that you miss too often in cinema: the meaning of age for relationships and how it challenges love.

So while waiting for Amour to start in cinemas I recommend you watch his last movie Das weiße Band – Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte (The white ribbon). It was shown at the Filmfestival in Cannes in 2009 and brought Michael Haneke his first Golden Palm.
