Scarborough: Yorkshire's Little Gem

Tucked away at the end of the line on Yorkshire’s coast, Scarborough is a classic English seaside town and perfect for a couple of days with a few cameras.

I first visited Scarborough around 15 years ago when a local band invited me to play bass for a few of their gigs. I instantly fell in love with the place – the mixture of sun, sea, sand, music, and great people was hard to resist. I remember taking lots of photos (now sadly lost) over there back when film cameras where all anyone had. This February, however, was the first time I visited as a dedicated Lomographer.

The great thing about Scarborough, from a photographic point of view, is that it’s got a little bit of everything. Tacky seaside shops; a small fishing harbor; an old Roman castle; a rugged bay; beach huts; Victorian architecture – the list just goes on. So it’s a great place to take a variety of cameras and get a little trigger happy on that shutter button!

I took my El Capitan La Sardina, the LC-A+, a Lubitel 166, Sprocket Rocket, Spinner 360 and a Holga 120GN plus a Lomography Sidekick bag full of film! Over a couple of days my girlfriend and I didn’t put our cameras down!

So, where to visit? If I were you, I’d go to South Bay with some chrome film – the many colors of the various shops and arcades look great when cross processed. The more rugged North Bay looks better with standard color film in my opinion as it’s a more natural, less man-made part of town. Don’t forget the castle up on the hill too – we never visited it on this trip but it would be a great place to take the Spinner for some panoramic views. If you’re not sure, just take everything you have – trust me, you won’t run out of things to take photos of!

El Capitan leads the way for the new La Sardina collection. With a red and yellow motif that screams authority over the Seven Seas, this 35mm wide-angle wonder commands attention both at sea and on land. Comes with Fritz the Blitz, Lomography’s most powerful flash ever. Sail the high seas with El Capitan, available in our Shop.
