Castel Grande in Bellinzona

Bellinzona is the capital of Canton Ticino, the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. This town is famous for its castles, which since 2000, belongs to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Here you can find some photos of the most important one: Castel Grande.

Castel Grande is the most important of the three castles of Bellinzona, in the italian-speaking region of Canton Ticino. Others names of Castel Grande are: Old Castle, Castel of Uri (from 1506) or Castle of St. Michael (from 1818).

The three castles along the boundary walls of the city were declared as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.

The castle was built on the oldest settlements (prehistoric and Roman) and medieval settlements (X-XII century). From these periods remain only few archaeological traces in the soil. Some buildings have been erected in the last two centuries, others between 1250 and 1500. The castle has undergone many stages of restructuring, expansion, and reinforcement works. There are signs of war damages, periods of carelessness, and some demolition works.

Today, the large internal surface gives the impression of a large empty space: many buildings were already eliminated centuries ago (many of them in the fifteenth century). The purpose of this intervention was to free the inner surface for the temporary accommodation of military contingent in case of need.

The outer walls and towers really deserve to be photographed. You can choose between lots of different perspectives!

The complete restoration of the complex, made thanks to the generous donation of Mario Valle and directed by architect Aurelio Galfetti in 1982-92, was very respectful of the original profile of the castle.

All these photos were taken with a Praktica LB camera and an Ilford FP4 film.

I was there in 2006 and loved it. It was Ascension Day and about the only think open in the town. I took about a hundred pictures there, but unfortunately they were all digital.
