Quick Quest of a Quaint, Quiet Village of Osbaldwick

Quick Quest of a Quaint, Quiet Village of Osbaldwick.
The Quiet Village of Osbaldwick is a quiet village outside of the City of York. No Phone or GPS signal, no smell of digital age, all analogue.

I live in a quiet and quiet village just outside of the City of York, it’s not far from the city but seems to devoid of any outside world contact, with neighboring villages having perfect signal for almost everything, Osbaldwick appears to a black hole. No phone signal, lousy GPS signal, rubbish TV signal on cable and sky, pretty naff phone line, and internet that’s as temperamental as a really temperamental thing!

I guess Osbaldwick would be ideal for the analogue – analogue the sworn enemy of the digital world. My Enemy… the enemy of Hanspan. Someone needed to attack this digital monster and embrace it, showing it that the analogue ways of recent past are not so distant, and always reliable.

So the great battle of Analogue vs Digital began in Osbaldwick began, some say it’s myth, some say legend, I say truth and this is how it was; It was a sunny afternoon in little Osbaldwick, and the superhero Hanspan had finished her usual 9am-5pm studio job as a graphic designer, but as ever the neighbors had always seen her, every evening returning from work and collecting Jack the wonder dog – a black Labrador with a shiny coat (and a smile for the camera – see pics) and heading out for the usual evening wander, protecting the village.

Off she ventured, this day no different to others, underwear on the outside of he clothing, (in true superhero style) and her pink glittery cape gently flowing behind her in the gentle breeze. Today was no different to any other, armed with her weapon of choice the LC-A+ and a roll of Kodak B&W film.

Hanspan and Jack the Super dog fought the digital world saving the village of Osbaldwick and captured the analogue moments all around, preserving them forever more.

    Stalking the City: Ricardo Lozano

New York is an infinitely photographable city in spite—or because—of its innate chaos. And even when the medium is film, praised nowadays for the virtue of slowness, the photographer must keep up with the city’s pace. Ricardo Lozano, 35mm photographer and Lomography community member, managed to do it for the series OK Commuter, now a book by A Love Token Press.

Self to the World: The Photography of Leanne Surfleet

A self-portrait may take root in confidence, extreme shyness or alternate bouts of each. Leanne Surfleet goes through this kind of fluctuation when the camera is all eyes. The attraction—as far as we’re concerned—is the mix of uncertainty and a kind of quiet poise. And here and there, a flash of skin that is more a mystery than full-on revelation. Even Surfleet’s portraits of other people have the same hushed invite, as if to say questions are encouraged. There we took our cue.

In prime areas of New York and San Francisco, the phrase ‘rush hour’ is always on the menu. Drive up to Reno, and the same expression fizzles. Many roads are framed by mountains and shrubbery, a picture of calm in the city. But the night makes up for the day’s stilly mood. Casinos flaunt LED signs and marquees, a treat for urban photographers.
