1. Describe your first memory as if it were a still photograph
My parents and several friends are standing outside a converted schoolhouse in 1970s rural Vermont, looking at the components of a cast-iron spiral staircase spread out on the lawn. They’re probably scratching their heads and wondering how the hell to put it together. It was a big event for me.

2. What’s one quality you wish you had?
I’d like to be a better sleeper. One of those people who can fall asleep anywhere, and sleep soundly.

3. Who or what was the first thing you fell in love with?
A book: Superfudge by Judy Blume. I must have been about seven. I re-read it many times, day and night. One time I woke my parents up I was laughing so hard.

4. What would you rid this world of in a heartbeat?
Nuclear bombs, chemical warfare, biological weapons and anything that enables someone to wipe out thousands of people in one go.

5. What decade in history would you like to step into and why?
1920s Philadelphia, so I could see what my flapper grandma and great aunts got up to. When I knew them they were a lot quieter, but I bet they had some adventures in their youth.

6. If you could hang as a camera around anyone’s neck, who would that someone be?
Probably David Hockney. He’s looking at beautiful landscapes, for long periods of time.

7. Where’s your secret garden, where you can escape to?
The West Pennine Moors, exactly seven minutes from my door. It makes up for not having a real garden.

8. What famous person (dead or alive) would like to have a drink with?
If I had to choose just one: Molly Ivins, the late Texan newspaper columnist. I’d also love to chat with Tony Benn, Willie Nelson and Patti Smith.

9. If you could no longer see, what’s one image you’d like burned in your mind?
The faces of my children.

10. Who’s your hero, in fiction or in real life?
My mother, whose generosity of spirit, raucous humour and love of life made her the center of every gathering and the life and soul of our community. She is missed every day by so many people.
