Bittersweet Breakfast at Bitterzoet in Antwerp

If the new Gallery Store opening up this summer hasn’t convinced you to visit Antwerp, this place will. Bitterzoet (meaning: bittersweet) serves the best breakfast, lunch, and coffee I have yet encountered.

Very popular in both Belgium and France, are the croque monsieurs. These are grilled sandwiches with cheese – additional ham or smoked salmon are optional. You can also pick the croque madame, a grilled sandwich with a fried egg on top. Served with side salad, this is the most amazing breakfast, brunch or lunch ever!

I have been told they serve the best hot chocolates as well. I’ve only tried their coffee, which is amazing! They also serve granenkoffie, which is a natural caffeine-free ‘coffee’ made from grains and herbs. The lady running the place is quirky but very friendly. She recommends bread with mozzarella and tomato out of the oven. “I always put my heart and soul in this dish”, she told us, “I promise you, it’s the best on the menu”. And she was right!

There is even a small terrace outside. Oh and did I mention it’s right in the middle of ’t Zuid, the nicest area in Antwerp, and also very close to the Fotomuseum and the new Lomography Gallery Store!
