Black and White Photographs by Giovanni Verga

How would you react if you discovered that one of the most important Italian writers was a photographer, just like us? Read about it after the jump!

I’m about to announce some news that will make your reading more enjoyable and happy. The greatest exponent of Italian Literature at the end of the 800s, Giovanni Verga, was an enthusiast photographer!

The Father of the Italian Realism, had found in photography a great way to capture the reality. Take a look at some of his photos:

The picture is from 1897 and portrays Mr & Mr.s Pisasale serving the Verga’s family.

His photos show simple and quite modest images. However, Verga as a photographer was not always different from the technical point of view. He proves to be as effective and immediate as his writer self.

Those are, for the most part, images taken by Giovanni Verga during his travels to the north. In fact, during his trips, he used to immortalize pieces of daily life that were different from those of typical Sicilian. But not only that, Verga tried to translate and reproduce primarily a human landscape. In addition to the numerous portraits of friends and family, there are humble images of Catania, which reveal a continuity with Verga as a writer. Farmers, stewards, waiters and a lot of men and women were reflected in their simplicity, taken in their everyday environment or in common places, such as a balcony of his house in Sicily, used as a photographic set, as an alternative to the decorated walls or simple curtains. The postures, the clothes, the same way of recovery are important clues able to communicate a lot about the lifestyle, aesthetics and history of time.

Not many people know that Verga was also a photographer, even among his passionate readers! So, if you are fond of his work, I hope I gave you good news!
