US CitySlicker Kate: A Lomographer in Dallas

For their first task, the US CitySlickers will show us around their towns and cities, documenting their experiences in analogue and telling us stories along the way. Let’s meet Kate and learn about Dallas!

Hi y’all! I’m Kate and I’m a lomographer living in Dallas. It was love at first sight when my eyes spied a Diana F+ at the Ft. Worth Museum of Modern Art a few years back. It’s mine now and so is a pretty fun little Hello Kitty Fisheye camera that I can’t seem to leave home without!

The city of Dallas means so much to me. I moved here from Northern California about 71/2 years ago and the move was not only from small town to big city, it was also my first big move away from my childhood town. Going from a college town full of independent artists, musicians and entrepreneur types to what I perceived as a large main stream international business city wasn’t immediately easy, but knowing that it was now home, I knew I had to make it feel like home. So for the past 7+ years, my husband, daughters and I have been working on it and I can say pretty confidently that we’ve done it. We love experiencing this city through it’s amazing art venues, music venues, restaurants, fun festivals, and whatever else happens to be going on!

Since we are members of the beautiful Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Arts District is where you just might find our little family on a weekend afternoon. Not only is the art museum a wonderful place to spend time, but just next door is the Nasher Sculpture Center, a museum housing sculptures by Rodin, de Kooning, Gaugin, Matisse, and so many more. Spending time in the outdoor sculpture garden and grabbing a cookie at Wolfgang Puck’s Nasher Cafe located in the museum is one of our favorite things to do!

When we get hungry, we love to jump on the McKinney Avenue trolley that takes riders to Uptown where there’s a lot of fun restaurants. It’s a free ride on a vintage trolley built in the early 1900s. It’s so much fun!

It’s great to take time to appreciate all the sculptures that are placed around downtown as well.

This is a little glimpse of me in my city. Can’t wait to continue to show you all around!

Hey! I'm the Austin Lomography CitySlicker. I moved to Austin from San Jose. I've been here almost 14 years and love it. I'll be in Dallas for some training next month. I'll be taking that opportunity to shoot some lomos while I'm there. Congrats on being picked for Dallas.
