For their first task, the US CitySlickers will show us around their towns and cities, documenting their experiences in analogue and telling us stories along the way. Let’s meet Tracy and learn more about Los Angeles, California!
City: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: College Guidance Associate
Hi, I’m Tracy. I’m a lomographer and (surprise) I live in Los Angeles. Let’s totally be friends. …I’m serious. Ah, Los Angeles – I feel like I have so much to tell you! With so much of its fame and notoriety attributed to movie stars, rock stars, paparazzi, and scandal, when people think of Los Angeles, they usually think big.
LA spans over 450 square miles and is home to about 12 million people, so big is an understatement. Enormous! That’s so neat. The best thing about Los Angeles, though, is its vast diversity: culturally, socially, and geographically. With that diversity comes the potential for a place to be really awesome, because the city’s nuances begin to emerge: where does one go for quiet reflection or maybe some volleyball? Is that graffiti, or is it art? You want to go on a harbor cruise today? Done. And the weather is perfect. Will you be in traffic for a while? Probably. But the payoff is totally worth it.
The juxtaposition of the glamorous and the everyday is just a part of life here in the City of Angels. Finding beauty is easy – it’s everywhere. In the most obvious, and also the most unconventional, of places.
As for me, I’ve lived and worked in LA since 2008. I use a Diana F+, an Olympus Trip 35, and a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim. I may steal my mom’s fancy Canon and go to town with that, too. There are still so many interesting and wonderful things to discover about Los Angeles. I’m super excited to have the privilege of photographing them and sharing them with you. Unless you want to come visit, then we could do it together. Cool, we’ll get some tacos and ride bikes.
