We’re halfway through the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, but it’s never too late for us to remember some of the previous Palme d’Or awardees and the talented directors behind them. Today, the spotlight is on LomoKino filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s winning film from 2010, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.
Film fans across the globe are all eyes and ears (and fingertips as well!) on this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but here on Lomography, we’re also interested in looking back at the notable Palme d’Or awardees of the previous years. You might have come across some of the classic ones, but we’d also like to bring you back to a recent winner by LomoKino filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, which won the coveted distinction in 2010.
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives centers on the last days of the title character, who is suffering from acute kidney failure. Uncle Boonmee opted to spend his final days in the countryside, surrounded by his family and loved ones — including his deceased wife’s ghost and his lost son who comes back from the jungle in a non-human form. The Thai filmmaker’s unique cinematic style shines through this surreal ghost story, set in Isan region where he grew up, and inspired by a Buddhist monk’s book which contains accounts of people who were able to recall their past lives.
