Makapu'u: My Favorite Summer Beach

Out of all the beaches I’ve written about, Makapu’u Beach is probably the one where most of my memories are from, and consequently, where most of my beach photos are from! It’s a picture-perfect location.

It’s crazy to look back at photos and feel the memories rushing back. Makapu’u Beach, located on the south shore side of Oahu, Hawaii is one of the most (overall), user-friendly beaches around. It’s got the best combination of sunny skies, clear and refreshing water, comfortable sand to romp around in (as opposed to beaches like Waikiki with super rocky sand), lots of space to relax, and parking too!

I don’t think I’ve ever been to Makapu’u and have been disappointed with the weather or the water. The sun and water are great for taking pictures and Lomographs.

I also mentioned parking, which is crucial because who likes to park far away and walk a mile just to get to the beach? Not me, that’s for sure. Sometimes, the lot might be full, but there’s always side-street parking to compensate.

Makapu’u is in the middle of a valley-like land structure, so the mountains on the side really add an interesting landscape. From the top of the road, which is high above the beach, the views are amazing!

My love and I would always venture out with friends to Makapu’u and have a blast. Although I’ve never done it myself, I can imagine that a little picnic would be fantastic at this beach. The sand is really great to sit on because it’s fine, but not too fine to stick in your swimsuit.

But beware, sometimes there’s a high surf warning because of the choppy waves.

Makapu’u Beach is definitely one of my favorite locations to bask in the summer. Even though it’s pretty far from Downtown Honolulu, it’s definitely worth the drive to see the landscape and beauty.
