Take a cinematic look back on the rich history of the Cannes Film Festival. From the black and white candids of the ’40s, to the colorful characters of the ’70s, to the digital spectacle of the ’00s, this slideshow shows the most iconic figures in cinema and reveals the evolution of celebrity photography.

When we found the incredibly archived photographs of the Cannes Film Festival spanning 64 golden years, we knew we had to share it with all of you. Think of this as a quick primer on the history of the fest. Here you’ll find the movers and shakers of modern cinema in photos from 1946 to 2011.

Keep an eye out for critically-acclaimed directors like Jean-Luc Godard, Woody Allen and Quentin Tarantino, award-winning actors like Gene Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Jack Nicholson, and Penelope Cruz (with an analogue camera on the red carpet, no less). You’ll also find cameos of various personalities like John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Elizabeth Taylor, Michael Jackson, and so much more from all over the world!
