Basking at the Beach: Beaches I Went To and Things I Saw

2012-05-22

Whenever I go to a beach I never just lie down and start tanning. I get bored. I go and wander about exploring. In Scotland, tanning is very rarely an option; if we had sun all year round I might be content to just lie in the heat. When I’m at a beach I love the sound of the sea and the feel of the sand. Here are some interesting shorelines I’ve been to and the sorts of things I’ve seen.

Cadaqués: I went on holiday to Spain last year. The water was cold but it didn’t stop us going for a dip. I also liked sitting by the harbour eating tapas, soaking in the atmosphere. We were right on the beachfront. It was so relaxing. My favourite things I saw on this beach were sea anemones, an abandoned boat engine and three French kids skimming stones.

Inverary: I walked along the beach front a bit while I waited for a bus earlier in the year. My favourite thing is the smell of the salt and seaweed. It roots me so strongly as being in Scotland. The water was like a mirror. Everything was still. I sat on a bench looking out over Loch Fyne listening to the seagulls. I almost fell asleep!

Eyemouth: A fishing village near North Berwick. The sand was very pale and continental. My favourite thing I saw here was a girl putting her hair up. I got a great photo of her. My least favourite thing was army of wasps that wanted to eat my sandwiches (not so conducive to basking)!

For a city-dweller like me a beach is a real treat. I love to see what interesting things there are and especially to walk along the coastline. This year I want to make sure I get to at least one sunny beach somewhere.
