Gothic Prague

You can definitely spend a life time in Prague, but for this location we’ll focus on the Old Town and it’s close surroundings.

Prague is a city where you can spend a life time, but what do you do if you only got little more than one day? I decided to take the metro up to the magnificent Prague Castle and then slowly criss-cross my way down to Old Town Square.

Prague Castle is the largest medieval castle complex in Europe and sure is a nice view for the keen eye with the beautiful St. Vitus Cathedral inside. Coming out of the castle area you are presented with a splendid panorama of the city. I made my way down from the hill and strolled into Mála Strana. Then stopping by the Lennon Wall, where once was a portrait of John Lennon. It is covered in graffiti, poetry, lyrics and political messages and was subject to great irritation of the old communist regime. Not far from the wall there’s a small bridge crossing the little Certovka Canal. The railing of the bridge is full of padlocks and I heard it was a tradition for newly married couples to scratch their names on a padlock and lock it to a bridge before throwing away the key as a sign of commitment.

Crossing over the Charles Bridge, one of Europe’s oldest stone bridges, is a bit of a struggle with all the tourists and merchants, but it really is very beautiful with its many statues and icons. The Bridge Band was of course there performing their usual routine of New Orleans jazz. At the other end of the bridge awaits the Jewish Quarter and the medieval center of Prague around Old Town Square where you’ll also find the Astro Clock.
