The Analogue Reader: 'One-Sit Reads'

2012-05-03 5

Reading a book in one sitting may be a daunting task for many, but for the hardcore analogue reader/bibliophile, it’s not at all impossible, especially when you have a good book in your hands. Have you ever gotten hooked on a book and managed to finish it in a day? Step right up and share it with us after the jump!

A Listverse author shared a list of books that his teacher referred to as “one-sit reads,” for which he provided a disclaimer: “Length of time you are willing to sit may vary depending on patience and comfort of seat.” Seeing the names of some big-shot literature figures in the list, I’d have to agree with the disclaimer. Let’s take a look at it now:

1. Night by Elie Wiesel
2. Candide by Voltaire
3. A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess
4. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery
5. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
6. The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann von Goethe
7. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque
8. Animal Farm by George Orwell
9. The Stranger by Albert Camus
10. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

I have to admit that although I find many of them familiar, I haven’t even tried reading any of them in one sitting. I’ve only managed to finish a few quick reads in a day, which I recommend to my fellow bibliophiles:

1. Ardor by Lily Prior
2. The Gravedigger by Peter Grandbois
3. Twinkle Twinkle by Kaori Ekuni
4. N.P. by Banana Yoshimoto
5. Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

However, I think it’s also possible for one to finish reading these books in one sitting:

1. The Lady and the Unicorn by Tracy Chevalier
2. Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami
3. Vita Brevis by Jostein Gaarder
4. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie

Do you have a list of recommended books for one-sit reads? Why don’t you share it with us with a comment below, so everyone can join in the fun and take on a read-all-day challenge!

Sad to say I've never finished a book in one day, let alone one sitting. Though I highly recommend Mark Haddon's Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.

I'm not sure how you could read The Picture Of Dorian Gray in one sitting. I'm a fast reader and I couldn't manage it. My fav would have to be Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman. I try to give a copy to everyone I can.

The Voltaire, Hemingway and Camus books on the Listverse list are certainly achievable (I should know!), and all very very good books too! I'd also add The Fall by Albert Camus, at just under 100 pages it is the perfect length for a long trip somewhere. Same goes for The Subterraneans by Jack Kerouac, and that book is written in one long stream of consciousness meant to be read at 100mph (as fast as you humanly can!). The perfect one-sit read!

Oh, boy, I have to confess that I'm a bookworm. I've read many books in one sitting, including most of that Listverse list.
But there is one that I've read in one sitting and I've never heard of someone doing the same: "100 years of solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

    @mauriciomunuera, WOW.

Some books I've read in one sitting:
    1. David Levithan's Lover's Dictionary. It's a 1 to 1.5-hour read.
    2. Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

    Enjoy reading. :)

New York is an infinitely photographable city in spite—or because—of its innate chaos. And even when the medium is film, praised nowadays for the virtue of slowness, the photographer must keep up with the city’s pace. Ricardo Lozano, 35mm photographer and Lomography community member, managed to do it for the series OK Commuter, now a book by A Love Token Press.

    A Color Remix

It's human nature to be restless and imaginative. The real may be interpreted as what one sees or how one sees something. For the daydreamer, a scene from nature transforms into a canvas. Suddenly a field makes room for chemical coloring, all those anachronistic streaks that somehow look right. Or else, those beautiful colors amplified or subdued to their most pictorial shades. All in the world of trial-and-process film photography.
