Island in the Sun: Polzeath Beach, Cornwall

The UK might not have your typical tropical warm climate or endless sunshine in the sky, but I have found a treasure of a beach closer to home, which I reckon could rival many a beach abroad! Read on to find out where it is.

Polzeath Beach is the other side of the bay to Padstowe, on the north coast of Cornwall. As you may know Padstowe is a busy town in Cornwall, mainly due to the influence of Rick Stein, the restaurateur, but Polzeath, is so quiet in comparison and relatively unknown. In fact, if it wasn’t for my friend, who we went with, knowing about it having been many times as a child, we wouldn’t have found it and gone.

We went out of season (October), so it may be different in other seasons, but it was so quiet, only a surf school, some surfers in the sea, some dog walkers and us.

The beach is lovely and open, with great sand, the nicest we saw in the whole of Cornwall. You have to bear in mind that it is on the north coast of Cornwall, so it is very exposed and can be windy, but that didn’t stop us from having a lovely walk along the coast.

We didn’t venture into Polzeath so I don’t know too much about it as to whether there are shops and cafes etc., but that doesn’t matter as the beach is worth it on it’s own.

Who needs faraway places and tropical climates when this is practically on our doorstep. It was one of the prettiest beaches I have visited in the UK, and can surely rival some with a much sunnier climate than ours!
