A Trip across Venice with My Lubitel 166B and Polaroid Land Camera 340

I’m Lewis, a photography student from London, and I took a trip with two friends across Venice, Rome, and Amsterdam during the last week of February. In this article I will be focusing on our visit to the historic and beautiful city of Venice, showing the photographs I captured with my Lubitel 166B and Polaroid.

It wasn’t too early a start for us as we set off for the airport at 5 in the morning to catch our 8:40 plane from Gatwick to Marco Polo. The flight was a smooth 2-hour ride and we landed in Venice to see a bright clear sky. Our water bus ride was another 1-and-a-half hours until the stop for St Mark’s Square came into view. The architecture was a true marvel in my eyes as we stepped into the Piazza San Marco, The Campanile towering over our heads and the ornate basilica to name two were outstanding. The annual carnival was on during our stay and the outfits worn by the locals were outstanding!

All the colors within this city where so vibrant, the color of the water, the bright clear sky, the carnival costumes…they all came alive on film and the Lubitel captured more detail than I had ever seen before after scanning the negatives at university.

The Grand Canal was my most favorite site on the trip, harboring 170 buildings on its banks, most dating from the 13th-18th century. After our first climbed up the Rialto Bridge, we looked out onto the canal and saw the parade of historic structures following the curved lines of the water way. I enjoyed photographing the gondolas in particular as they are found nowhere else in the world.

One of my best images was taken on the Ponte dell’Accademia bridge, capturing the canal facing the Santa Maria della Salute.

This was my first holiday with the Polaroid which I snapped up on eBay for £26! I had only packed two packs of Fuji film so I had to limited myself to 6 images per location, choosing my shots so carefully. I was really pleased from the results the 40+ year old camera gave me after being plucked out of a woman’s loft and flown across Europe. The shots are sharp yet posses a dreamy quality about them.

The Lubitel 166+ is a loving recreation of the Soviet-era classic. Based on a design that dates back over 60 years, this camera is updated with new features like the ability to shoot both 120 and 35mm film. Shoot mind-blowing images with the Lubitel 166+, available in our Online Shop.
