Livin’ Life with My La Sardina: Reeled in by the Domino

Feeling in a gap in my Lomography camera collection, I decided to fill the void with a La Sardina Domino and learn all about it before hosting a dedicated La Sardina workshop in the sunny city of Birmingham.

Opting to get involved with the wide-angle craze, I picked up a La Sardina Domino edition from the super cool pop-up shop at Selfridges in Birmingham. I was itching to try it out, but deciding to go for something a little different, I threw in some expired AGFA ASA 200 film I’d picked up sometime ago to see how my new toy handled a temperamental film.

The resulting photos turned out well, I made a point of carrying my Sardina around as much as possible during my excursions in Birmingham.

And around my hometown in Nuneaton along the canal tow-path and into the town center.

The simplicity of the focusing system and the fixed aperture of the lens meant I didn’t have to worry too much about the settings giving more time to think about what I was photographing rather than worry about whether or not I’d gotten everything right! Which served me well from time to time during my travels.

And the wide angle lens was perfect for capturing some architectural photographs I’d been visualizing for some time.

Pleased with my initial ‘test shoots’ I knew I had to push the boundaries of my Sardina further, and knowing I would be leading a merry band of workshop people around Birmingham on a Saturday afternoon, I loaded a roll of my favorite film, the Lomography X-Pro Chrome 100 into my new camera and took it along to teach my inquisitive new friends all about the super sardine can shooter!

Ambling around sun-soaked Birmingham, we chatted about all things Lomography as we familiarized ourselves with the humble La Sardina and tested the limits of its wide angle lens.

Finally parting ways with half of our company, me and two of my new friends, wandered back towards the city center finishing our films on whatever we spotted along the way, including each other!

Although, at first underwhelmed with the introduction of the La Sardina, I can now say it has really garnered my favor and is one of my new favorite cameras. I can’t wait to experiment more with X-Pro, Tungsten, and high speed films!
