Cloud 9 with the Pop9: Pseudo-Colorsplash Flash for Your Pop9

1

What to use your Pop9 to get colorful patterns? Get your Pop9 at dusk, add color gels to your flash, aim at cool subjects, and enjoy the results of a Pop9 colorsplash!

One of the things about the Pop9 that is super cool is the flash that comes with it. Put color gels in front of the flash and you will get your super cool pseudo-colorsplash!

Things you need:

  • Pop9
  • Color gels – use colors that work well at dusk, red and yellow work well against a deep blue sky.
  • Cool subjects – Anything that can fit in one square alone should do the trick for the pattern. I waited until spring and looked for flowers.

How do you do it?

Just go out at dusk. Before you aim at your subject, choose a color gel and put it in front of the flash (be careful not to block the light with your fingers). For these pics, I use a Fuji Superia 400, way expired. Depending on the film, the sky in the background will come dark blue or black but the subject will be illuminated by the color gel and the flash.

Some variations of this theme:

In this pic, I aimed down and the flash painted the flowers and the grass.

In this one the gel covered the lens, not the flash.

Tipster: Three Easy Distressed Masks for the Lomo'Instant

I like to make and use masks with my Lomo'Instant camera, but sometimes they are too dominant. In coming up with more subtle masks, I found several that produced an interesting, distressed look, especially when paired with the camera flash and color gel strips. They're especially good for creating Halloween-themed photos.

A Hunt for Curios and Wonderful Patterns

Some photographers have an instinct for the unique. Whereas others aim to fashion the ordinary into a singular picture, these hunters are obsessed with what cannot be found elsewhere. They prize an exclusive scoop on architectural patterns, artisan quirks, and objects that stick out of an everyday scene. And when the photographers find them, they will twist and turn to get the most flattering angle. Only right for curiosities that beg to be shared.

Long Exposures Around Europe with the Minitar-1 Art Lens

One of the things I like the most about the Minitar-1 Art lens is how sharp the focus can be when you shoot with a small aperture. So if you are one of those that like to shoot at night, get a tripod, add this to a late dark winter afternoon, and you will end up with a bunch of beautiful long exposures. This is what I did on my last trip to Europe.
