Thanda and Phinda Game Reserves: Luxury and Adventure At Its Best

Both the Thanda and Phinda Game Reserves are located in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal about 20 km north of the city of Hluhluwe (pronounced shish-louie). This area is situated on the northeastern portion of South Africa encompassing an array ecosystems ranging from mountains to rolling hills and plateaus to the Indian Ocean. However, the real gems of this area are located in the bush: Safari style.

There are places on this Earth that genuinely offer the greatest adventures. South Africa is one of those enchanting places full of culture, history, and beauty. Neither hiking in the mountains nor letting my feet sink into the beach has ever struck me as spiritually as entering the bush. It offers a feeling of survival, a feeling of freedom, a feeling of, “Dang, that lion is incredibly close to me.” You sense a true depiction of Mother Nature’s ingenuity.

My boyfriend and I were incredibly lucky to embark on such magical places such as Thanda and Phinda. These are both private game reserves that offer beautiful villas, delicious cuisine, impeccable service and, most of all, the wild! Each day consists of two game drives in an open cruiser with the expertise of a tracker and ranger ensuring to get you up close and personal with some of Africa’s most dangerous mammals. Aside from the lions, cheetahs, and elephants, you get to experience some of the most beautiful creatures in existence, as well as some of the most vibrant culture. We were lucky to partake in some traditional Zulu dances, feasts and history. An all-around enlightening journey.

I took along my Fisheye 2 and Holga, and I tried to capture this region the best I could. I wish there was a telephoto lens for the Holga like my fancy schmancy SLR, but I did the best I could with my little plastic cameras and they did not disappoint.

So, if you feel the “adventure itch” setting in, South Africa can offer quite the cure.
