UK CitySlicker Jenny: Manchester, The Best Place to Buy Your Dancing Shoes

Whatever tribe you have chosen to follow there are plenty of quirky independent retailers in Manchester to kit yourself out with your next dancing outfit.

Aside from the main usual suspects on the high street, the Northern Quarter has a plethora of shops to choose from and has been known as the heart of the alternative scene in Manchester and the best place to get your threads.

Manchester‘s musical history has made its mark on its residents and visitors to the City.

The many nights that happen in the city’s pubs and clubs offer a perfect solution for people wanting to show off their threads to likeminded individuals. My mate Rich runs a Northern Soul night called Different Strokes at The Old Nags Head. I decided to bob down on New Year’s Eve to get some shots of the sharp suited bunch, they came out OK aside from the blurry ones thanks to too many JD and cokes!

The students coming to Manchester always have something to offer and many of the universities’ graduates use Affleck’s Palace as a place to test the market with new designs. Whether you’re a Goth, Rocker, or just love a bit of the vintage, Affleck’s has a variety of different shops with packed rails to sift through.

The Manchester Craft Centre is home to a number of designers and if it’s unique Jewellery you are after there’s professionals that are expert in a variety of mediums and styles.

I met Ciara through a friend at university.

Ciara studied Jewellery design at the Manchester College and in collaboration with fellow student Maritha Lindholm designed and created BLAC. The pair create statement jewellery using bold shapes combined with a sense of dark glamour. Pieces are often cast in Silver or laser cut from acrylic.

Ciara and Maritha have worked hard to develop their space in the Manchester Craft Centre and BLAC jewellery have pieces available across a wide price range. Ciara is currently developing a new solo project and is always available for commissions should you want something unique and extra special!

If you fancy getting creative Jeweller and Silversmith Selina Campbell is situated in the studio next door.

Selina offers Jewellery Making workshops and private tuition with courses teaching basic tools use, workshop practice and materials, and students will be shown a series of techniques to practice both during the day and at home.
