Keep a food diary in analogue and let the simplest meals become the best memories.
When I first began using film, I had the notion of “saving up for the best shots” because the pictures weren’t as disposable as digital ones. But really, what is a best shot?
Gradually, I began to realize that the best way to approach film photography is to let it assimilate into your daily life the same way we let digital photography do. Maybe we can’t Instagram our picture or update a Facebook status with our analogue photographs but they will prove to be keepsakes for the simple memories.
Sometimes, I bring my camera along for a meal even if the only picture I take is the food on my table; I like to be reminded of my days with the food I eat, it’s the greatest simple pleasure of everyday life.
My partner is always teasing me about how she never gets to eat food fresh on the table because I have to have a picture taken first. As a photographer and a blogger, I can hardly apologize for my “duties!”
Sometimes, a picture of my food is the only picture I take for the day and many times they turn out to be my favorite pictures of all time. Won’t you start keeping a food diary?
