Island in the Sun: Makapu'u Beach

3

My favorite beach of all time on the island of Oahu; Makapu’u Beach! Out of all the beaches around, this is my favorite spot to lie in the sand, jump in the water, and explore the shoreline. Read on to find out more about this place!

I live on an island surrounded by sparkling water and beautiful beaches. There are countless surf spots and numerous places to take your friends, families, and loved ones to. But in my opinion, the best one to visit is Makapu’u Beach.

Whenever I have a day off from school or a long weekend, I usually come here with my friends! We pack up our cars, throw towels in the trunk, and grab bottles of suntan lotion on our way out of the house. More often than not, we see people at the beach that we recognize from school here. It’s a widely-known beach so run-ins with friends here are common.

There’s a parking lot for beach users located across from the Sea Life Park. Being a public beach, there are bathrooms for changing, showers to rinse off, and benches in the shade.

The water here is always cool and refreshing! Most days it’s quite clear too! (Except in the summer when there are clouds of seaweed…)

Depending on the day, there’s sizeable waves for body surfing and body boarding! If you’re not into that, make sure you duck under!

On the far side of the beach is what my friends like to call the “water park”, because there’s tide pools and so much to explore! Be careful if you plan to bring your cameras here. Make sure it’s lightweight with a hand strap. The crashing waves come up along the rocks and there’s always a possibility of your stuff getting splashed on. Even so, it’s a great place for taking photos!

Not to mention, there’s also lots of beach babes…hahaha…

It’s hard to sum up a beach in words. The best way to find out more about it is to go for yourself! Go on, get on that plane. You know you’ve been wanting a vacation for a while, use this as an excuse to zip out of the office for a while! Come visit us on the island in the sun. :)

Against The Sun: Shapes in Contre-jour

The brighter the sun, the larger the cast of the shadows. Contre-jour, however, does not rely on the shadow, but the figure itself. This photographic technique is used to create stark silhouettes of the subject with the help of direct natural light. Gladly, the Lomographic community has plenty of elegant images in contre-jour. We gathered our favorites.

Loose peacocks, water buffalos and the magical character of the island were also a reason for me to go and spend one Sunday afternoon there, with my LC-A+ and the LomoChrome Purple film.

Celestial Bodies by Rachel and Eleanor Hardwick, Chrissie White

The young photographer friends set out to America’s West to reconnect with nature. It all began as an individual documentation of the world around them and organically formed into a collaborative project over the course of their trip. The result is a self-published art book that explores the relationship between nature and their bodies.
