Spring Fling Series 9: Somersby Falls

How about this for a romantic spring afternoon, pack your lunch, and head out to Somersby Falls on the New South Wales Central Coast. You and your loved one will feel like you’re away from it all and can enjoy the picnic areas, bush walking trails, and enjoy the rain forest sounds with the bell birds and kookaburras.

Somersby Falls is located in Brisbane Water National Park. To physically see the falls, you have to walk down some recently-renovated stairs to a viewing area. The area is set in a rain forest and the moisture can be felt in the air when visiting. Above the falls is a picnic area with BBQs, tables, and grass to relax in and enjoy. The car park is close to the picnic area and the falls are only a short walk, unless you decide to walk all the way to the bottom of them, which I think is definitely worth it as you get to see the bottom fall then also.

The first falls that you see from the stairs are quite pretty as it tumbles in several steps towards the smooth bedrock below. The shorter, lower falls is a short distance further downstream reachable by more descending steps. Soon the steps end, and in order to get good photos of the lower falls, we had to do a little bit of scrambling and crossing the stream. Watch your step as you go down to the lower falls as the mossy path can get a little slippery in some spots.

Both the falls are best seen after heavy rain. There is also a bush walk and the track takes about 20mins to finish and is 0.4 km long. On your way back up the stairs from the bottom falls, keep a look out for a small, unmarked walking trail, which is quite short and has a nice view of some other rocks and nice rain forest trees and ferns. Visiting the falls can easily be a day trip from Sydney as it is quite close to the freeway.

Erin Woodgate is an Australian Lomographer who loves cupcakes and travels as much as possible. She always has her LC-A in her bag and treats Polaroid/ Impossible film like treasure. The ‘Spring Fling series’ highlights a bunch of romantic locations around the Central Coast of NSW, where Erin is from. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world you should definitely check out these locations, especially if the weather is good, like in spring!
