Hello! Tell us a bit about yourself.
Wasssuppppp! I don’t exactly do write-ups very well because I tend to over hype myself. But heck I’d do it since you have so much spare minutes to even end up on this interview piece. So lemme entertain you for a bit then.

I hail from the mighty Lion City of Singapura. I’m fun-sized. I love everything in excessive proportions. I worship the old-school and believe that everything has a rhythm. I have way too much inner energy that I could neither express through speech or writing. Dancing is my best language and I refuse to believe what my naked eyes perceive. Cross-processed pictures are the truth to me. In case of an emergency, I always have my LC-Wide camera with me. I listen to nothing but Funk/Disco music and I can shoot perfect rolls when I’m plugged in to any of James Brown’s music. Blame it on the boogie.

How many Lomography cameras do you have in your collection?
I have 15! Oh gosh I’m such a loyal fan! Oh yes, and also a dozen other analogue classics.

We’re sure it’s hard to pick one, but which Lomography camera is your all time favourite? And which camera is on your wishlist right now?
I would say it’s a tie between the LC-A+ and the LC-Wide. These two go hand in hand like bread and Nutella. If you have both on each of your hands, nothing’s too fast or too close to capture. True story.

I fantasize about having a Lubitel 166+ over my neck some day. That thing is one beast of a camera and a show-stopper!

Please share with us your top 3 favourite shots (taken by yourself of course) ever, and tell us a bit about each photo.

‘Alex’s got a brand new hairdo’, taken with Lomo LC-A+ with Fisheye Lens. Double Exposure. Colour-splashed. X-Pro.

You know what they say: ‘The best pictures are the ones you never remembered taking.’ Everything’s perfect with this one, the colours, the odd-ness and the way it makes you wonder. The surprise-factor blew my head to bits. I asked at least 10 different people on a random occasion to describe this picture in their own interpretation and their answers ranged from sci-fi medusa to electric eels. I like photos that leaves you bewildered beyond words.

‘Swim Cody Swim!’, taken with Lomo LC-Wide with KRAB Underwater Housing X-Pro.

I have an extremely close relationship with my 2 year old Golden Retriever, Cody. We do everything together and he appears in my Lomographs like a superstar. This picture shows him coming at you in full force during his monthly swim-thing. But what really matters to me more is the experience of making this picture. From gearing up the camera, to dipping hands into the water, trying painstakingly to get Cody’s attention and waiting for that perfect moment. This picture makes me warm, and I bet it made you go ‘hee hee!’

‘Funk Soul Brotha’, taken with Blackbird Fly. Double Exposure. Colour-splashed. X-Pro.

When you have a brother dropping good beats and making people dance like machines, you know this is a moment you have to take a Lomograph. The job is not complete until you double exposure it with something significant that defines the night. That explains the coloursplashed booze. Beer and good music makes a good party.

What do you like about the Lomography community?
Let me quote the almighty Lomography founders Wolfgang Stranziger and Matthias Fiegl to answer this question.

‘Lomography is an international communication project. It’s communication with pictures. It brings people together. We love people and we get super positive feelings about little things.’ (Stranziger & Fiegl, 2006)

The above sentiments are the exact reason why I love the concept, the following, the culture and the community that screams the analogue way of life. Lomography is many things to me. It is an escape, an outlet, a way of life and source of inspiration altogether. Pictures are a common language and each Lomograph represents a bit of somebody I’ve never met from another side of the planet, but yet I start to imagine so much about how they might be like.

In life, we always ask, ‘What’s next?’ The Lomography community always has the answer. There is just so much more to film than it being a legacy-recording medium. The shared energy and ideas transcending around is just awesome.

As a Lomography Singapore Community Star, do you want to share any advice or tips for Lomographers out there?

Open your mind and your heart. What you have in your hands is a very basic appliance, but it’s a tool that can only work with your positive energy. Always be inspired by everything and anything around you: objects, humans, spaces and empty spaces. Everything you shoot has a rhythm. Even you. And because it has a rhythm, you are not stationary. Neither is your subject. Be bold and try new things. Experiment! Because with film, you are not taking a picture, but making one.

As a Lomographer, you are a communicator. But, don’t replicate what your naked eye sees, but instead use your subject to express you. The world is your vocabulary, so form a visual sentence with your 36 exposures.

Do not be afraid of hiccups and ‘mistakes.’ Lomography is not about the outcome but it’s everything about the experience. Cherish every creak, ding, and click as you snap away. Keep figuring things out and lighten up, this is not work but all play.

And lastly, name your camera, and be one with it. Peace.
