Sunday Find

I was invited to a Sunday brunch that resulted in an unpredicted discovery, I would have never expected to come across Saint Petersburg finest in Mexico City. I bring you, the OG LOMO LC-A

It was 10:30am. and I didn’t want to get out of bed.
I was already late and to round it up, it didn’t feel like I was fully awake just yet.
I quickly took a shower, got dressed and drove for 25 minutes to my destination.

My girl and I were the last to arrive. We said Hello to everyone and as we sat on the couch we were offered coffee and tea. I said yes to the coffee, without hesitating. By the time I finished my cup of coffee I finally felt awake. Once at the table, the food was just as eclectic as the company. There were English, Scottish, Greeks, Spanish, Americans and Mexicans. I tried not to stuff myself but it’s always pretty hard for me when I have all this food at the table, even harder when for dessert you get carrot cake and brownies.

I hadn’t fully digested my food, when our host gets up from the table and walks away only to return after a couple minutes. He comes back to the table holding a plastic box and before he sits at the table, gives me this look while handing me the container…
To my surprise, that box held an original LOMO LC-A that he got in a Saint Petersburg’s street market ten years ago. I was holding the box in my hands just looking at it until I felt it was ok for me to open it.
The instruction manual covered the camera, which was the first thing I looked through just to find all Russian characters. Underneath it there was the camera in perfect condition, waiting for me to pick it up.
Of course, I was playing it cool and trying not to look anxious.

I wanted to check if the camera was in working conditions, the first thing that occurred to me was to open the back and press the shutter, while doing that I Looked through the viewfinder and noticed that the small red light still turned on. Inspected every other part I could think of, looking at it from the right and left side, top and bottom. Imagining all the pictures that it had already captured before it came to Mexico and before it was in my hands.

Most of the people around the table seemed not to understand the excitement I was experiencing while holding the camera. I could feel how my face lit up like a small kid whenever they get a present.
I would have never imagined while getting out bed before that morning, and getting a little mad at the fact that I had to get up to go to a brunch with my girl’s co-workers.
Had I known what was awaiting me, I’m pretty sure it would have been different.
I carefully put the camera back inside, and gave it back to our host with a heavy regret in my chest.
