Memorable Mixtapes: My Long Lost 90's Mixes

A few months ago when I was moving and sorting out my things I found some of my old 90’s (a few of which are somewhat embarassing) mixtapes! It was a real nostalgic trip down memory lane. Read on to know more about them.

I used to spend entire afternoons recording mixtapes with my favorite songs back when I was 12, 13 and 14. Then I started making mix MiniDiscs and then Mix CDs and now, I make iTunes playlists for my iPod!

I remember at the time I used to be really mixtape crazy. I would make mistakes for my boyfriends, and they would make mixtapes for me. Sometimes, I would write mixtape letters. Yep, my mixtape letters consisted of small snipets of different songs all put together, no pauses inbetween them, so that the different lyrics from the different songs would make up coherent meaningful phrases together (yes, I was that crazy!). I didn’t find any of those of course as I gave them to boyfriends and didn’t keep copies for myself.

But, having found my own old mixtapes I’ve had a few hours of nostalgic bliss listening to them. Some even made me laugh at their incoherence and/or choice of songs. I remembered some songs I used to love and had already forgotten, and I remembered the nights spent watching the then amazing and now defunct MTVSuperRock show (does anyone here remember it?).

I used to have a lot more mixtapes than the ones I found, as I made new ones all the time. But I don’t know what happened to the others. I found a 1996 Nirvana mixtape, where I only put Nirvana songs. Another 1996 mixtape with Metallica and Nirvana songs. A 1997 Hanson mixtape where I only put Hanson songs. A 1997 mixtape that only had KoЯn songs except for one Backstreet Boys song somewhere in the middle (weird…I know! But at least I was eclectic…hehehe). A 1998 mixtape that only had Morphine songs on one side, and VNV Nation songs on the other side (again…weird!) And a bunch of mixtapes that had alot of bands. So here are some of those:

1999 Mixtape:

Nine Inch Nails – Closer
Fields of the Nephilim – Moonchild

It was also around 1998 that I discovered Microsoft Publisher and with it discovered my true passion alongside music (graphic design) and started making covers for all my mixtapes, and MixCDs and covers for my MTV SuperRock VHS recordings, hahaha (albeit very bad covers, but you can’t expect much from a 13 year old + Microsoft Publisher!).

I don’t have most of the mixtape covers anymore, but I found this 1999 mixtape still with the cover (with an Edgar Allan Poe poem on it):

Here’s the track listing:

Side A

The Sisters of Mercy – Black Planet
Joy Division – Love Will Tear Us Apart
The Cure – Just Like Heaven
The Cure – Burn
Bauhaus – Third Uncle
Bauhaus – Passion of Lovers
The Creatures – Don’t Go to Sleep Without Me
Echo & The Bunnymen – Killing Moon
Dead Can Dance – Saltarello

Side B

Millennium – One Last Waltz
Meat Beat Manifesto – She’s Unreal
Moonspell – Herr Spiegelmann
Rammstein – Stripped
Type O Negative – My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend
Katatonia – Deadhouse
Tiamat – Brighter Than The Sun
Anathema – Deep
Dimmu Borgir – Mourning palace
Lacuna Coil – Cold

Maybe all these bands on my tapes won’t mean a thing to most people who read this article, but I’m hoping at least someone who had the same taste in music at the time will read this and remember their past and smile just like I did when I recently listened to them. Looking back, my playlists now are completely different but that’s what I love about music: it follows you through life and by listening to different bands, songs and genres that you used to listen to you get to revisit your past and your memories, alot like what happens with photographs actually! So for me, songs are audible photographs of my past.

What about you? What were the bands you listened to in the 90’s?
