Love at First Lomo: Me and My First Camera

My first camera—Lomo or otherwise—is one of my prized possessions. It changed my life and how I look at the world around me. What was it? Keep reading to find out!

On May 23, 2008, I received my first Lomo camera: my Holga 120FN. I remember the exact date and year because it was a birthday gift, and I count every birthday as a photographic anniversary. This camera means so much to me because it was the first camera I had ever owned and one that I had wanted for months and months. I knew almost nothing about photography before, but the Holga was so simple and basic and mechanical that I was forced to learn quickly about the mechanics of photography. My first successful shots and my many unsuccessful shots taught me that it doesn’t matter what you shoot with just as long as you know how to use it.

Photos from my very first roll ever.

I took the camera with me on a trip to the mountains the week after my birthday. I was already enamored with the shape of it, and I wanted to take advantage of the long car ride to learn how to use it. When I got to the house where we were staying and I met the old couple that lived there, the wife of the couple gave me a few boxes of film she had lying around from the 1980s. I shot a roll of Kodak Plus-X walking around their property on the side of the mountain. I took it right to the lab to have it developed when I came home, and when I got my first prints back, my life changed right there; in that moment. I was a Lomographer. There was no going back. Looking back on it now, I wouldn’t have had it happen any other way. That’s how I fell in love with my first Lomo camera.
