Viðey Island: Imagine Peace

Viðey is a small island, just a five-minute boat ride from Reykjavik. Today it is best known for the Imagine Peace Tower – a memorial to John Lennon from Yoko Ono.

Viðey is one of my favorite places in Iceland. It always feels good to be there. Especially during the summer when meadows are green and the wind is warm. My husband and I love to hike and watch birds there. In August, we always go to Viðey to pick caraway. Later, in autumn and winter, we use it for brewing delicious caraway tea and flavoring the bread we baked. But our favorite “activity” on Viðey is to relax. We just lay on the grass on a cliff and listen to the ocean.

In Viðey, you can also have a meal at the lovely, Viðeyjarstofa restaurant. It is a little bit pricey, but often there is a special offer for waffles and coffee (you have to ask about the offer before buying the tickets). Another option is to bring your own food and have a picnic. There is even a building called Viðeyjarnaust, where you can have a BBQ. We usually eat our lunch there but then we always have waffles in the evening, just before the ferry leaves the island.

As I mentioned above, Viðey Island is best known for the Imagine Peace Tower. It is an outdoor work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. Each year the Imagine Peace Tower is lit between Lennon’s birthday, October 9, and his death, December 8. The Tower consists of 15 searchlights with prisms that act as mirrors, reflecting the column of light vertically into the sky. On a clear night it appears to reach an altitude of at least 4000m.

If you ever come to Iceland, visit the glaciers and waterfalls, and have a hike in Viðey.
