Secondhand Love Affair: Finding a TLR at the Largest Rummage Sale in New Jersey

In the Fall of 2011, I went with my girlfriend to the Visiting Nurse Association Rummage Sale, the oldest and LARGEST rummage sale in New Jersey! This rummage sale is amazing, with tents set up all over selling items organized by category. Of course, I was most drawn to the vintage camera tent. Read on to find out what I found there!

The Visiting Nurse Association Rummage Sale in Far Hills, New Jersey occurs twice a year: once in the Spring and once in the Fall. All proceeds from sales go to support the VNA. As I said already that this is the largest rummage sale in New Jersey, and I wasn’t joking — this thing is huge, spreading across over 75,000 square feet! My girlfriend Jacqueline goes to both sales every year as she is obsessed with all things vintage and her mom helps out at one of the tents. Jacqueline took me this past Fall for the first time and when I saw this Yashica D Twin Lens Reflex camera at the camera tent, I was hooked. I had to have it! Lucky as my birthday was right around the corner, Jacqueline’s parents bought the camera for me as a gift! Definitely one of the best birthday gifts ever.

I went apple picking in Upstate New York with my family the following day so it was the perfect opportunity to try out my new old Yashica D!

We also did a bit of hiking, where I took a couple double exposures — a cinch to do with the Yashica D!

I immediately fell in love with this TLR! I love looking down into the camera to take pictures, I love how large the viewfinder is, and I love how the viewfinder frames your shot so nicely. Here are some of my favorites that this camera has produced for me.

I was also extremely excited to use my first roll of slide film ever with the Yashica D: Fuji Velvia 100F. I got the film cross processed and must say that these are some of the best photos I’ve ever taken. See for yourself below.

I can’t wait for the next VNA Rummage Sale coming up this Spring; who knows what I’ll find this time! If you’re anywhere near New Jersey, I would highly suggest taking a visit. May 4-6 is when it’s happening next — save the dates! And be sure to check the Visiting Nurse Association website for more info about it!

@hervinsyah everything sold at the rummage sale is a donation, so you really don't know what kind of film is going to be for sale before going. This year, I just bought the whole box of film not even knowing what particular types they were because it was do cheap. So, to answer your question, there was no infrared film however there were 2 rolls of Kodak elite chrome along with the 4 velvia 50s :)
