Interview with NYC’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor owner, Michael Angelo.
New York City’s Meatpacking District was once a place few dared to go. But now, it’s the toast of the town. Go window shopping or splurge at the most couture clothing stores around. Climb aboard the newly opened High Line park nestled comfortably just a few stories above street level.
But in a part of town this chic, you have to have hair that lives up to that new Helmut Lang dress. Keep it local and swing by Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor. The name may sound over the top, but that’s only because this place is (in the best possible way). Part haven for the arts, part chic design boutique, part supermodel level beauty salon – Wonderland exceeds expectations on every level. We spoke to the man himself, Michael Angelo to find out more about westside life in Manhattan.
Name: Michael Angelo
Location: Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor, 418 West 13th Street NY NY 10014
Occupation: Renaissance Man
Primary Objective: To bring Art, Beauty and Design together under one roof
THE PERSON you would most want to photograph? (and why?)
Elizabeth Taylor is a living legend. It would be such privilege to do a classical portrait of her as a senior. One that really showcases her beauty. She still has the most beautiful eyes….
Best place in the city to grab a drink after work hours? (and drink of choice?)
Lately I’ve been dropping by The Living Room at The Standard. I love sitting outside under the Highline. The Bicyclette Rouge is super refreshing and only $10, so it’s easy to buy a few for my friends!
The album you could play on repeat all summer long?
NYLON did an AMAZING summer playlist. 22 songs, downloadable from iTunes, and FREE! The tracks are all stellar, but For Our Elegant Castle by Of Montreal is my fave. And Tiga’s latest, CIAO!, is SUPERHOT!
If you were a Lomography camera, which would you be? (and why?)
Like the the Lomo LC-A+, I am “simply the finest, most delightfully unexpected, robust, pocketable, vividly colorful, and soundly addictive” guy in town! Not to mention we’re both total classics….was that too immodest?
What is one secret about Manhattan that very few know?
I’ll never tell…..
Strangest thing a customer has ever said/asked?
“You are just a fucking hairdresser.” – Pat Steir
Favorite time of year in NYC? (and why?)
Late Spring, Early Fall. The light is beautiful and the days are long.
“I never leave home without:”
What has been your biggest inspiration lately?
Favorite place on the globe to photograph? (and why?)
New York, Paris or Rome. I love the diversity of great cities. The people, architecture, graffiti, culture, streets, foods, colors, lights… My eyes can’t stop searching!!!
Advice of the day:
If you come from a place of love and speak the truth you will never go wrong. You may not get exactly what you expected, but what you get will always be in your best interest.
Mr. Michael Angelo is also quite the shutterbug, often using his photography to benefit charitable causes domestic and foreign. A long time Lomographer, here’s just a sampling of what happens you put him behind the LC-A+ lens:
