Welcome to ‘City Tips’, a new series where the Lomography team and Lomographers share their top-picks in the featured city. To kick it off we have the New York City team sharing their favorite coffee shops. Join in the conversation and share your favorite spot to grab a cup o’ joe in the morning, or to lounge for hours while sipping a fancy caffé mocha, in the Big Apple!
“I’ve just arrived in New York City. What a place! Just smell those skyscrapers. Had breakfast at a little deli on Ninth Avenue. Cheese Danish and a cup of coffee, black as a moonless night. Hit the spot.”

Alexandra Klasinski (Chief Online USA): Variety is one of my favorite places in Williamsburg to grab a Stumptown coffee (or a cold brew in the summer!), use their free wifi and get some work done (if I can find a seat). Just a few steps away from the L train, it’s a gem in the neighborhood. They also have pretty delicious snacks!
221 Montrose Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206
Hans Hendley (Retail Manager USA): All the baristas here are super nice and they take pride in their drinks. Their frequent buyer program is great too! 7th drink is always on the house.
102 E 23rd St New York, NY 10010
Martin Thiel (Manager of NYC Gramercy Store): Some of the nicest (and stylish) baristas in all of NYC! And they serve Intelligencia Coffee which is incredible. The shop is always a buzz full of regulars and friends, and the have a really cool outdoor seating area decorated with old record players and stuffed animals. Stop in and say hi to Suffi, Sam, Roye or any of the crew here, they are really fun.
Red Horse Café
497 6th Ave Park Slope Brooklyn, NY 11215
Stephanie Murano (Manager of NYC Greenwich Village Store): One of the best spots in Park Slope to grab a coffee and a treat while you surf the web or read a novel. The shop has a rustic feel and a relaxed vibe. I definitely suggest trying one of their delicious chai tea lattes and a pastry. In the summer the way to go is an iced coffee, they actually use coffee ice cubes! There is nothing better than getting a huge mug filled with your favorite beverage and sitting at a huge wooden table next to the window.
Now the question is, for both bona fide New Yorkers and travelers to the City That Never Sleeps (what’d you expect with so much caffeine), what’s your favorite coffee shop? Post your recommendations below!
