Kodak Portra 160 NC 35mm: Lovely Grain and Gorgeous Results

As part of the older Kodak Portra films that were divided into the ‘VC’ – Vivid Colour and ‘NC’ Natural Colour categories, Kodak Portra Natural Colour is a beautiful professional colour negative films made mainly for portrait and wedding applications with soft ‘natural’ colours, a lovely grain and gorgeous results.

I had read/ heard a lot about Kodak Portra before I actually used it and once I did use it – I really have no idea what took me so long to load it into my cameras. I did however choose the perfect location to use my first two Portra NC 160 films – Paris!

I tried this film in two cameras – first my Holga 135bc which I had used before with an expired film and was pleasantly surprised with the soft, gentle results and I was excited about how the results with this would look. Due to the nature of the camera the grain is a little gritty but the results are just what I expected with lovely colours, soft contrasts and subtle light that brings out the details of the photo beautifully.

I also tried the Kodak NC 160 in my Yashica Samurai, which is an autofocus, half frame SLR camera and this is where this film shines, it is a professional film after all and with a higher quality camera, the amazing qualities of this film really blossomed.

The details captured through the Yashica’s lens with this film are beautiful, with a fine grain that you barely notice the NC element of the film really shows with gorgeous, soft colours that compliment the summer light of Paris and the final results come together to produce a beautiful photo worthy of any photography, let alone a professional one.

I can highly recommend this film and my only sadness is that this film has been replaced by the new Kodak Portra film that combines the qualities of the NC and VC into one film. However, if this film is anything to go by, then I can imagine that the results from the new film are equally as beautiful…. and hopefully it retains the gorgeous ‘natural’ results and soft grain.

The Kodak Portra 160 VC 35mm is a true professional`s choice. This portrait film yields great contrast and slamming colours, giving your shots a subtle x-pro look (without the x-pro)! See the whole range of colour negatives in our Shop.
