Love at First Lomo: My Holga 135BC

In early 2009, I discovered the ‘blogosphere’ and as well as starting my own blog, I started reading blogs that talked of Diana and Holga cameras… and through the simple act of starting a blog, I started a journey into Lomography which I never could have predicted and quite simply, my first Lomo camera changed my life.

Photos from my first rolls of film in my Holga 135bc.

My first knowledge of Lomography was the results… and really that was why I fell in love with Lomography and started my journey. I wanted to create beautiful photos like the ones I was looking at. However, initially I was reluctant to get a Lomography camera as at the time, I was only aware of the 120 cameras and after a little reseach I realised that 120 films would be quite difficult for me to acquire and would further be quite costly to get developed. Then, I discovered the Holga 135bc and on a sunny Saturday my very own Holga camera arrived at my door, all the way from Hong Kong and needless to say, this camera changed my life.

It’s funny how a few pieces of plastic can have such a dramatic affect on your life but it’s true. Without this camera my love for 35mm film would not have been so passionately reignited, I wouldn’t have started a rather large collection of cameras (which continuously grows), I never would have opened a shop and sold my photos around the world and I definitely wouldn’t have had so many people interested in reading about my camera adventures on my blog and through my Lomography articles.

My first double and long exposures.

Although I have purchased many more cameras in the past 3 years, my little Holga is still one of my go to cameras: I love the colours and contrasts, I love the sound of the shutter, I love waiting for the photos to be developed, I love its accidents and its surprises and I honestly can’t imagine travelling anywhere without it, so far I’ve taken it all over the UK and even further into Europe.

I can honestly say that I have never regretted my first Lomography purchase and that I’m so glad it has had such a massive effect on my life.

Loved this article. And you'e been tot he Sculpture Park in Yorkshire :D I really want to go there, but living in Scotland and being unable to drive makes it rather difficult at the moment.

I bought a Holga recently but it's the 120 film format, if only I'd thought and bought the Holga 135! (perhaps that'll be the next to add to my ever growing collection too ;) )

Similar feelings were ignited on me when I first discovered the Holga, about half a year ago, in my case on the 120mm format. I always had a thing for photography, although never been into it as deeply as I would like. And then, I bought the Holga... My prior tentatives before it rarely gave me that "this is what I pictured in my mind" feeling that the Holga delivered right in the very first shots. I don't believe that the camera alone can be responsible in itself on making the photographer, but the Holga gave that "push" that made me dive into this realm of photo-taking. As far as now it's my solely camera (a few cameos of my father's Zenit 122 here and there, but that is a beast yet to be tamed :P ), and I'm fine with it. I think I'll go on with my Holga until it's last click. And then... we'll see what happens next.
